I think most people are willing to risk getting something resembling a cold.

Each person must make their own judgement - but there’s been no mask requirement in hospitality or outdoor locations for six months and there’s now no requirement to wear them anywhere.

As it goes, we wear them in shops - but there’s no law, guideline or indeed advice to do so.

So I’d say it’s up to you to decide.

We’ve been to England rugby, quins and England football matches since last summer and not caught Covid at any of them.

It’s down to the individuals own risk assessment now. I think most of us will agree, wearing masks isn’t exactly a Mardi Gras of fun or comfort. Will I wear one? Yes, but only if required. Now we have a choice, I balance it out with my own Circs.

I think in enclosed spaces for extended periods of time like planes, it makes sense, but at sporting events being mostly outdoors? My personal view is the risk is minimal.

For admins, feel free to delete, but please don't ban me.

Glad to see I have a reputation as some sort of tyrannical ogre!
I don't even ban Bish! On reflection I may have banned a couple of people over the years I've been running a message board, but that was on the sportnetwork board which didn't offer the range of possible sanctions that this createaforum board offers.
Just checked the ban list for the board and the answer is nobody is currently banned.

I don’t wish to argue with that number, Rocker, but an extra ~ 85,000 a year - a 17% increase - not something that should be taken lightly, wouldn’t you agree?

(Based on ~ 170,000 excess deaths since pandemic started, 2 years ago and Rockers quoted 500k deaths a year)

Is the average age of the dead still around 80? I think it is - hence the word most.

The excess death figure is not a "scientific" number.
There were <7,000 who's deaths were mainly or solely due to COVID from March 20 till Dec 21 according to ONS....
This does not tell the whole story of course as most of those who died of, or with it, were >80 therefore likely had many contributing factors.
If you look at the number of deaths each year it has been increasing for many years other than a few small blips. Probably due to an increasing number of people in the country and more older people who of course are at more risk of dying.
There is we have to remember no possibility (at the moment) of immortality. We are all mortal beings and will at some point die.  There are only two certainties in life, death and taxes.
At any rate Omicron has totally changed the picture.

That is a dramatic misunderstanding of what "with covid" and "of covid" really mean.  The vast majority of those people are dead because of covid.

I don’t suppose we’ll ever know the true numbers as each country uses a different way of measuring reasons for deaths but how many excess deaths are because of covid not from it. Just as another example, a relative died last year and the death certificate had the heart attack that killed them, heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes and covid positive. Guess which statistic gets added to even though it’s not what killed them. They were 82.
I also watched a program where an expert pulled apart all the stats and explained the contexts and how you can manipulate them to show whatever you want if you leave out certain information.
I think most people seem to have decided that rather than not going out or doing anything they would take their chances and go back to as normal as possible.

They would have been added to the statistic that records whether they had covid when they died. If covid contributed to their death, then that is recorded. The BBC has a primer here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-60000391

Important quote:

"During autumn and the run-up to Christmas, only about 15% of deaths involving Covid in England and Wales did not list Covid as the cause.

In the week after Christmas, that rose to 22%"
