A thread started to post about 'getting to the BG' turns into a thread posted on by the lefty lovies on here.

I mean, you can take it like that if you want to. The actual post, as per the title, says that the "RMT have made BG14 difficult to get to", and this has led to a discussion about various things such as the validity of strikes, collective bargaining and the economics of pay rises (and ULEZ for some reason).

You are the first person to start to start general name calling, so clearly you have an opinion on this, but as you haven't expressed it then I won't speculate.

Not blinking likely.   [Admin - I hope than blinking doesn't trigger the alarms.]
Cos - then I would be in the same boat as my team mates who work in our European locations who are covered by unions.

I am genuinely interested in knowing why you view this as a negative, if you are happy to share more.

People should be treated fairly as individuals.
Not all grouped together into a big group and just given the same stuff.

E.g. if I am a high achieving individual, then I should get a better increase than my team mate who is just punching the clock.
If I know that my entire team will get e.g. 5% increase no matter what my personal contribution to the team is, then this does not incentivise me.
In a factory situation where you have for example 5000 line workers all doing a similar task, then it is probably easy to define the minimum tasks that are required for the job role. As long as everybody hots these minimum standards, then you should all get the same increase.

However, in my particular case, I work in a team of 4 people. The team leader is based in Belgium, as is one of my team mates. My other team mate is based in Germany. I see on a daily basis the difficulties of working with team members based in 2 countries who are represented by works councils.
As an example - one of my team mates was not allowed to use MS-Teams as there was delays in getting it approved by their works council. It made our daily stand-up meeting interesting.

I think that there are two points in your response here - one about pay, and the other about working conditions.

Re pay - you seem to be saying that if one person meets the minimum requirements then they should receive the minimum benefit, whereas another who excels should receive additional reward. I don't really dispute that, but the person doing the minimum shouldn't be penalised with below inflation pay rises.

Re working conditions - I have no experience of how works councils operate, but they seem to be different to unions - they represent the employees in a company as opposed to an industry or sector, and exist at the employees request to prevent the employers from introducing changes that negatively affect employment or working conditions. Your example of the use of Teams seems like a peculiar situation, but I would be interested to know whether your colleagues in Belgium and Germany think that works councils overall are a benefit or hindrance to them.

So, if this is the only point that didn't make sense, then can I assume that everything else I wrote was fine.
(Just remember, I will need a few assistants when I become President.)

For the avoidance of doubt (I think...) I completely agree with the sentiment of your post.  Mine was more an off-hand dig at how pay rises in line with inflation are a key bargaining point, except for when inflation is low or (potentially) negative in which case that important principle magically disappears.

As I reside away from an urban environment I have to say I was surprised at how much Nurses, Railway Staff, Teachers et al actually earn as a Basic salary. The vast majority of people working in the West Country are barely on minimum wage.

I think a lot of the populus would love to have a chance at working on the railways as it is good pay. All of the occupations you've mentioned and certainly are to do, but in line with a lot of us still earn very well.

In terms of going after job security, turning down the no compulsory redundancies until 2025...no job is secure these days. Any one of us could go into the office etc and be told sorry its not working, we are closing etc.

In defense of the RMT etc, its poor to hear the government have put the brakes on the RDG making an offer and instead putting their time and effort into legislation to go after those wishing to strike.

Only the South East. The rest of the country are quite used to living without a reliable train service.

From that well-known lefty rag, the FT:

Some people would always rather blame fellow working people, rather than fat-cat owners and conniving politicians for a risible train service

Jim Pickard and the FT more broadly has a real dislike for this government (I can't think why!).

I have to say I think its perfectly possible to hold both the train companies (and by extension the govt.) and the RMT in contempt at the same time.

Actually the FT is fairly leftist these days. It's been captured by the fabians like so much else in this country.
