Yeah I got chased through the streets of Newport in the 90s, there wasn't even rugby on. We were just a bit drunk and they heard the accent....

Surely you don't speak with an accent?

Yeah unusually I sound exactly like Stephen Hawking. I mean before, not now. Although I guess his voice hasn't changed.

The only tine I’ve been to Wales while a rugby game was on (albeit in Twickenham) was August 2007 when Eater scored 4 tries in a 60- odd thrashing. I watched the game in a pub called the Albert in Mumbles during a cricket tour - we had no problem with the Welsh lads that day and they were as humble as...

Ive never had a problem where ever I have been. Been on the losing end and the winning end and all times, has resulted in good banter, knowledgeable chat and a very high level of supping ability :)
Interestingly have been reading a lot of the "Have Your Say" on the BBC lately and there is a huge amount of seemingly keyboard warriors on there spitting vitriol and bile that I have never ever seen at an actual Rugby fixture. Granted its England V Wales but even so, like I say, Ive never seen anything but a good laugh and a healthy dissection of each others performance

I now own a pub in Shropshire 3 miles from the Welsh border in a town that is more Welsh than much of Wales - Welsh language bookshop, lots of Welsh speakers etc. The level of banter is high, but there is no outright hostility *well, not in my pub...

The atmos at Twickenham for the France game was non-existent. I know they didn't turn up at all and it was men against boys but seriously, from minute 1 (at the start of the game at least you can normally guarantee some noise) the whole place was flat. Don't know what's happened. I started going to England games as a 4 year old at the start of the 90s. The place was always buzzing. Haven't been for a few years now. Took my mum to the France game and we were both excited to be back. I have tickets for the Scotland game - should I be expecting the same fun vacuum? Is this a thing now for England games too (we all expect it from the LDH/Big Games) - and if so, how recent is this?

It’s like that a fair bit now TomBuckQuin. Too many on the corporate jolly amongst other things. Scotland may be a bit more lively. I often find France is a bit of a flat atmosphere. It got going a bit against NZ and Aus in the Autumn too but not like it used to be.

It's huge shame the atmosphere has changed - I first went to Twickers to see the Varsity match in 1980 - 13-9 to Cambridge. I miss those old Green Sheds. I remember learning, on the walk to the stadium, that John Lennon had been murdered!

In the early 80's, I went a few times - when the French were there - to share cheese and wine - it was a great atmosphere! But once the game went to the National League system, it seemed to change as the RFU needed more money (to pay for the stands, no doubt) and the era of corporate hospitality seemed to take over.

I remember watching the England v Australia game in 1988 - the night before, a chap in the pub I worked in said there were plenty of tickets available through the touts, so I went along and grabbed a few outside the South stand (face value too!) and sat down - right in front of the chap who I had spoken to in the pub the night before!

Almost no one in the crowd has a clue what they’re watching at HQ hence no atmosphere.

People stare at us when we’re shouting for England. And they don’t know when to get excited except if there’s a breakaway for a try.

It’s a shame - still love going though.

That’s the trouble when tickets are an average £100 a go for most people and your average rugby fan watches five games a year during the 6 nations.

On the online vitriol, that’s just the world and no reflection on rugby fans in particular

Yes, pretty much. Have Your Say on the BBC has got to be some kind of social experiment... Looked at one once. Never again.

I feel exactly the same. Games from when I was aged 5 I remember the atmosphere being top drawer. From when I started going in the early 90’s to around 2010 you would get a real sense of pride and passion in the stands and a massive amount of energetic atmosphere. These days there is little atmosphere. I honestly believe this is due to a big percentage of true Rugby fans/England fans being priced out these days at England matches. I used to be a Harlequins season ticket holder from 04-13 but then with a change of jobs and days I work I couldn’t justify continuing to have one. Now when I buy tickets for me and my fiancée and sometimes my little cousin it astounds me how much the prices have risen in single tickets within the last few years. To see what’s happened to International Teams start to happen to Club Teams worries me going forward.

You even get the odd rally call from the team manager or the key players these days for an atmosphere. They feel they almost need to remind the crowds to cheer these days. Yes that’s great to have them do this to encourage the crowd, but should they have to? Honestly if the prices were more realistic and justifiable, you’d find a sizeable atmosphere comparable to the days of old. These days the majority England’s Twickenham Stadium attendance you will find there are more corporate ticket holders, people with money to burn or the odd genuine fan who has saved two arms and a leg to watch a yearly match with his/her family.

Quite honestly it’s a disgrace to then call it a sport for all to enjoy.

I hope it changes in the future but can’t see it happening. If in the future I’m lucky enough to have my own children/ grand children I would love to be able to take them to England matches like my grandad used to take me to. If the prices stay the same though or rise I can’t see it happening an awful lot.

Do like the bloke with the “I don’t care as long as we beat the English t shirt on”. Not obsessed.

That's typical of all the embittered Celts. I was abused once in my local for supporting South Africa against Wales by a chippy Scots person. I replied that as I was married to a Saffa they were my second team and when (or if) I went heard him cheering for England I might consider supporting our neighbors who in rugby terms hate us.

We were robbed anyway. Piper had the hump with Sink. The two penalties given against him before he was replaced were total BS 😤
