Jersey FH/Centre.  Joined them from Ulster after starting at Bath.  Think he only played a couple of games for Ulster

He's only 23 - so a season getting regular game time in the championship may have done him a lot of good. Interesting that we've chosen to go for another young fly-half with Smith and Lang already on the books - possibly indicates that Smith is very much on the England radar post world cup.

Yeah never heard of him really helped.

Anyway, moving on. He's highly-rated. Gustard is clearly excellent.

But....

I can't actually work out why we need need another 21-year-old fly half.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing I just can't think why - unless Lang or Smith is leaving?

Still a young guy (6 months younger than Lang). To my mind that means Gussy's looking at having three players rotating/competing for the starting 10 jersey* and bench spots. Somehow doubt we'd bring in a fourth more senior FH option on top of this three.

He and Lang both turn 24 this year, not 21 ;)

are you referring to Brett Herron? He's 23, 24 in November...

Maybe he became available and it was too good to turn down even though we have two young FH already??

Hmm - no disrespect to Herron, but I feel like we need a more experienced 10 for Smith and Lang to learn from. Herron is just more of the same. If anything, he’s less experienced than they are ...

I’m hoping our final signings will be a bit higher profile. The last few have been a little underwhelming.

It actually makes sense I think. Fly half is a position where the "peak" age of a player has really come down quite drastically since professionalism kicked in. Mid twenties fly halves are now often the ones outperforming older, "more experienced" heads. It's rarer to see a 30+ year old fly half starting regularly at 10 on the world stage nowadays. Just look at the 6N. Starting fly halves were:

England: Farrell (27)
France: Ntamack (19)
Ireland: Sexton (33)
Italy: Allan (25)
Scotland: Russell (26)
Wales: Anscombe (27)

I put this down mostly to the fact that there's a special quality/attribute to a fly half that just comes naturally (and is maybe also developed from a young age with early exposure to a rugby ball in the back garden). There's something innate about a quality fly half in their "rugby brain" that means age becomes less of a factor - and so why wouldn't you pick a younger, quicker, stronger player in that position who has the same composure as an older player, who would be traditionally thought of as being a more experienced player with a calmer head.

Marcus has those qualities - he's old beyond his years and has real composure. Sure, he has a lot of growth still in him, but I think the days of "30+ = experienced" are gone. Marcus is already on course to break Brownie's apps record for us by a long distance - assuming he too is a one-club man.

What's more important to me is we have different styles of fly half so we can change up our game from the bench. I don't know loads about Herron but I think (don't quote me on this) he's quite physical - which would give us something different to Smith/Lang.

I think there still might be questions over Lang if he is a better 10, 12 or trying at 15.

Yeah, I'm also not sure I see Lang as a 10 long term. His best performances have undoubtedly come at 12, but we're pretty rich in resources in the centres. He's got a fight on his hands for game time over the next couple of years...
