FLY-HALF WILL JOIN FOR 2019/20 SEASON FROM CHANNEL ISLANDS CLUB

Harlequins is pleased to announce the signing of Fly-half Brett Herron from Jersey Reds for the 2019/20 season.

The 23-year-old, who can also provide cover at Fullback, is a product of the prestigious rugby school Wellington College, and made his debut for Bath United in 2014 before moving to for Ulster where he made eight appearances.

Herron then joined Jersey Reds last season and, having put in an eye-catching performance against Harlequins in last summer’s pre-season fixture between the clubs, has been a stand-out player for the Channels Islands’ side all season scoring over 100 points in 21 matches as they have risen to third in the Greene King Championship.

Herron said he was looking forward to the challenge of playing for a Gallagher Premiership side that will be battling for honours at home and abroad.

“It is an honour to be signing for a Club with the prestige and heritage as Harlequins,” said Herron. “The set-up at Harlequins is first-class and I know Paul Gustard and his team have built a strong winning culture there this season and the momentum is with them.

“Harlequins already has some excellent talent at Fly-half and I look forward to competing for a first-team place and being part of a successful future at The Stoop.”

Head of Rugby Gustard added: “Brett is a great talent and we are very excited about him coming to Quins. He will add competition for places and I look forward to the contribution he can make as we look to grow and develop our game over the coming seasons.

“He has been a key player for Jersey Reds and impressed us with his performance last summer in our pre-season fixture. He is a well balanced player whose game management caught our attention and he has been progressing nicely in a competitive league.

“We know he has the desire to develop and under the tutelage of Nick and Mark, two former international Fly-halves themselves, and we believe we offer him a perfect environment to fulfil his ambition.”

This bit stands out: "who can also provide cover at Fullback".

So that's what Gussy has in mind. Very happy to give this guy a chance, welcome Brett.

With that he might be seen as a long term replacement for Mike Brown

No disrespect to him but I hope this means the Cat will be leaving to free up cap space. He's been a bit of a Cronje signing, through no fault of his own. Wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up but it hasn't worked for him or us.

Hmm - no disrespect to Herron, but I feel like we need a more experienced 10 for Smith and Lang to learn from.

Nick Evans?

Not sure the fact that he can provide cover at full back means he's seen as the long term cover for Brown. That's something of a leap of imagination. Good to have the option if required though.

Haven't watched and Championship games so no idea what sort of a player he is but looking forward to seeing what he can do. Welcome Brett

Finally another posh player, our fan base have been rattled by some of the state educated players we've employed recently.

Yup, this. NEv as coach mitigates the "lack of experience" argument. I like this approach - Marcus will be a much better player, much earlier than most fly halves. Accelerated development. When you have talent, use it instead of sheltering it. Players only learn and get better by having the opportunity to screw up. And Marcus doesn't really do too much of that anyway.

Agree to an extent but Sarries have not won things by playing guys with potential.  Since 2012 I have heard about all the guys we have with potential and we have won diddly squat.  Happy to have Heron but would have liked to see a more experienced proven 10 come to the club.  I also trust Gussie to have signed someone whom will be more than a journeymen and who will make a contribution.

I actually like the fact that this makes Marcus clear first choice going into next season. He deserves that based on his performances this season and you'd even have a case to say he's been one of the most consistent fly halves in the Prem this season. He compares favourably to pretty much anyone, bar maybe Cipriani who has been a class above the rest of the field. Herron has been identified as a guy who can come in and push Marcus and bring something a bit different - all feels like the perfect scenario actually.

It adds to speculation that the Cat is leaving, or that Lang is not seen as a regular 10.
Or maybe we're stockpiling players who can cover multiple positions?

I had no idea - when I became a member (non-playing) back in the 90s one still had to put one's school on the application form.

Truly I missed out on the golden age. Honestly some of them don't even have a classical education.

It is an interesting point - all white players coming in so far. Nothing more to my point than that and it's not weighted with any judgement either way, just an observation...

Hey? I just meant that he went to Wellington. Thankfully rugby isn't just for public school boys anymore (although oddly the numbers of privately educated players in england team have gone up as a percentage after going down for a while) hence I was surprised to see Wellington on his CV.
