3rd Signing - Michele Campagnaro
« on: Tuesday 19-Mar-2019, 10:00* »
CENTRE TO JOIN LONDON CLUB FROM WASPS

Harlequins is excited to announce today that Italian international Michele Campagnaro will join the Club for the 2019/20 season.

The strong, ball-carrying Centre, who can also cover wing, was a member of the Exeter Chiefs squad who won the Premiership in the 2016/17 season and is currently playing his rugby with Wasps.

The 26-year-old represented Italy in the recent Six Nations campaign and to date has amassed 42 caps for Italy and scored nine tries for his country.

Campagnaro will join the Club after the World Cup, if selected, and said he cannot wait to get started at The Stoop.

“Joining Harlequins is a very exciting move for me and I am looking forward to the challenge,” he said. “I was very impressed with the winning culture that Paul Gustard has created at Harlequins and I know he is building a squad capable of winning a lot of trophies.”

Paul Gustard, Head of Rugby added said: “I have watched Michele in recent years starring for club and country and I know he will be a great addition to our squad at Harlequins.

“We have an array of exciting talent at centre at the Club and Michele will provide excellent competition for places as we look to progress and build on this season’s momentum.

“Michele is a seasoned international, a Premiership winner, who will add top level experience to our playing group. He is a fantastic talent, powerful through contact and will give us even more of an attacking threat next season.”

Loving this week so far. Welcome Michele! All the rumours are coming to fruition so far which makes me feel fuzzy about the potential for Snyman to actually be coming. He's the big one for me, but all the guys announced so far really strengthen the squad. Great stuff.

I hate to be the party pooooper but,

Is Anyone else a bit concerned that;

scrum half (care, mulchrone waters)
centre (saili, marchant, tapuai, lakise, cheesman)
prop (sink, marler, collier, auterac, ibuaopke)

are actually areas where we have strength and depth and we should be focusing on signing in other areas such as hooker, flyhalf, second row.

Hopefully my prayers are answered and we get

Baldwin
Cipriani
Snyman

Announced next but I have my doubts...

From who's been announced so far I'd add into this order:

scrum half (care, Landajo, mulchrone, waters)
centre (saili, marchant, tapuai/Campagnaro, lakise, cheesman)
Loosehead (marler, botta, Auterac)

Couldn't decide who'd be ahead in the pecking order between Tapuai and Campagnaro but feel all 3 signings so far have further strengthened us and given us better depth. Landajo especially.

The only one I currently doubt out of those is Cipriani.

Mulchrone is no Karl Dickson.  We need a Karl Dickson.

A prop replacing a departing prop is an obvious thing to do.

Lasike rumoured to be injury cover only.

So we definitely needed another LH prop (no.2 LH leaving - Boyce) and SH (Mulchrone + Lewis rumoured to be leaving - and Lewis is just rubbish anyway).

Campagnaro I think will be used as a utility back. He's a bit like Marchant - can play 13 and wing very effectively and cover at 12 if necessary too. I'm also getting the feeling that Lasike may have been a failed experiment and Cheeseman hasn't had many chances so might be off at the end of next season if not this summer...

So all in all I'm happy so far. But yes, given the 2-per-day pattern that seems to be emerging, I think, expect, hope we'll be seeing some serious pack signings too.

I'm not saying they are bad signings, just we are in more need in other key positions such as hooker, fly half and second row and it will be really dissapointing if these positions are not added to.

Well Fiss has been on the money so far - and he has a hooker (Baldwin), two second rows (Snyman, Young) and a fly half (Herron) on his list of rumours. So maybe take a view at the end of this week...

The one rumour I want to be wrong is Baldwin. Hope we've aimed a little higher than that, but I'll take him if that was the best we could get at the time.

This season we have 3 LH (Marler, Boyce, Auterac, Im not counting Lambert as he has hardly played at all).  We also have Head in the Academy.  As it stands next season, We have 3 LH (Boyce out Botta in).  With Marler calling it a day for England, would not be surprised if that stays as it is for LH.

TH, I could see an outgoing.  Sink, Collier and Ibuanopke.  Sassone in the Academy.  Do we really need both Mcnulty and Swainston???

SH we have Care, Landajo and Saunders.  Mulchrone is rumoured to be off (Ealing was the lastest), I am not sure what Waters contract situation is, and Lewis just isnt up to it.  We might look to bring in another "Squad" SH but if Waters is staying, I think 4 would be enough, Esp as Care will unlikely to be anywhere near England.

Centre we are well stocked now (Salli, Tapuai, Marchant, Campagnero, Lang, Heron if he comes, Barlow in the academy) but as mentioned, a few of those actually cover other positions.  Cheeseman will be interesting.  I like him but I fear he may go elsewhere looking for game time.

Plus the Lock from Cornish Pirates, Toby Freeman. A bit out of left field.  32yo, started at Exeter, went to Spain to play, then spent time at Rotherham and Nottingham before the Pirates.  Interesting one if true
