5th Signing - Glen Young
« on: Wednesday 20-Mar-2019, 10:00* »
YOUNG WILL JOIN HARLEQUINS FROM NEWCASTLE FALCONS FOR THE START OF THE 2019/20 SEASON.

Glen Young has signed for Harlequins for the start of the 2019/20 season.

Second row Young, who has represented Scotland U20s, has been with Newcastle since he played for their U18s in 2012/13. Two years later he broke into the First Team and represented his country’s U20 side seven times.

He played the 2015/16 season on dual registration with Doncaster Knights and was named in the Championship Dream Team that season, having made the play-off final. Young made his Premiership debut the following season and played a big part in Newcastle’s Challenge Cup campaign.

Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said: “Glen is an incredibly promising talent and we are looking forward to having him as part of our squad as we look to build on the early momentum we have earned to date.

“He has impressed us with his playing performances and we were delighted that he is the kind of self-effacing character we are looking for. He is hungry, energetic and is desperate to improve. He loves lineouts and will add real awareness and acumen to our calling systems and structures.”

Young said: “The set-up at Harlequins is excellent and under Gussy the Club have developed a winning mentality which I know will bring trophies there very soon.

“It is an exciting time to be at Harlequins and I am really looking forward to being a part of it.”

Think someone highlighted the fact that he's VERY light for a guy of that height. Not saying that's the be all and end all but hope he beefs up at least a bit to give us some oomph in the scrum. We didn't do too badly with Robson at 5 though - just need a Kohn-esque 4 next to him. Symons is pretty bulky.

Anyway, welcome Glen!

Don't know anything about him but welcome all the same. Replacing Glynn effectively

Yup, but unrealistic to expect them all to be internationals. I'll trust Gussy/Codders that there's enough about this guy for him to be useful when he does play...

Agree, you need squad players.  Was in the Championship team of the year (As was Boyce before he joined us).  Will have only just turned 25 when next season starts (ish).  Good young player and PG seems a good judge of a player so far to me (Lasike/Kunatani and SHC, for me are/were decent signings) and the 4 announced previous have all ticked the box also.

We're not going to get 10 megastar international signings, so quite happy to get a few squad players in where needed. If he's a solid, consistent player who can do the basics well and works hard I'll take that. I still think, even with another second row, we'll be light there but I guess it depends a lot on Horwill's ongoing fitness and how South and Lamb can step up.

Am I right in thinking we'll have:

Horwill, Symons, Young, [Syman / Lewies] and South and then Lamb, Hammond and Tizzard in the academy? I guess that's quite a lot depending on how much we want to rely on the academy and how injury free Horwill can stay. Dombrandt I suppose can also cover at a push

Thats how I see it.  We have been linked to the lock from Pirates also.  South is 23/24 now I think, he should be starting to look at getting more/some game time.

Luamanu seems to be leaving.  Ibuanopke played there for the A team, although I am not sure if that was more down to us being short

I imagine this means we are offloading a lot of the current squad fillers and academy.

None of them have distinguished themselves frankly.

Think Lamb has graduated from the academy and is on a senior contract now? He was one of the re-signings announced a couple of months ago. Luamanu rumoured to be off in the summer...

If you look at the fact that it appears to be 2 in, 2.5 out (including Luamanu) in the second row, that feels okay to me.

Snyman/Lewies, Symons, Horwill, Young, Lamb, South (6 players) to fill 3 matchday slots each week should be plenty - and there's always the option of bringing in injury dispensation cover if you get really unlucky with injury.

Will be interesting to see who leaves the academy and who comes in.  From the u18s I would guess Reilly the hooker will get a deal, plus Lynagh and there is a centre whose name escapes me, has played in the sevens for us, Lennox something maybe?? From the current academy, Musk and Kenningan have looked good when I have seen them. Barlow seems to be well thought of based of bits I have read.  Not too sure about the rest I must admit
