6 Quins in the England Training Camp
« on: Thursday 20-Sep-2018, 09:31* »
On the Offy

Mike Brown, Danny Care, Nathan Earle, Joe Marler, Chris Robshaw and Kyle Sinckler all named in training squad.
England head coach Eddie Jones has selected 36 players to assemble in Bristol for England’s latest training camp (Sunday 23rd September until Tuesday 25th September).

Leicester Tigers’ centre Manu Tuilagi is named in the training squad for the first time in over a year having last played for England during the 2016 Six Nations.

Danny Care (Harlequins), George Kruis (Saracens), Zach Mercer (Bath Rugby) and Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs) all return to the squad for the first time this season.

Chris Ashton (Sale Sharks) is included having last played international rugby in 2014, while uncapped wing duo Nathan Earle (Harlequins) and Joe Cokanasiga (Bath) are also called up.

Eddie Jones said: “The training camp in Bristol is our last opportunity to get the squad together before the Quilter Internationals so it is vital we put down some parameters, particularly with John Mitchell coming in as defence coach.

“We’ll implement a slightly different defence philosophy building on the great work Paul Gustard has done to keep advancing our defence. It’s a great opportunity for the players to work with John and for the team to keep evolving.

“It’s a chance to get the players thinking about England and the way we want to play for England and the way we want to beat South Africa. These players have the opportunity to press their chances for selection ahead of the first Test so they will have to be enthusiastic and ready to give their best.”

Ahead of the Quilter Internationals in November an England squad will be named on Thursday 18th October before they fly to Portugal on Wednesday 24th October to begin their final preparations for the four-Test series.

England will play South Africa (3rd November), New Zealand (10th November), Japan (17th November) and Australia (24th November) at Twickenham Stadium, with the kick-off for all games at 15:00, live on Sky Sports HD.

Earlier this week, Mitchell was confirmed as England’s new defence coach until the end of the Rugby World Cup 2019 and Scott Wisemantel will continue as attack coach for the Quilter Internationals.

Noticeably no Cipriani although not surprising.

Watch the media go into overdrive about Cipriani's non appearance in a TRAINING squad. It does seem a bit odd but I wouldn't be surprised to see him for the Autumn.

I'm surprised that Ashton is in but Cipriani isn't.

Forwards makeup is interesting -
2 x front rows (i.e. what you need for a XXIII)
5 x locks (2 spare)
6 x flankers (2 or 3 spare)
2 x No 8 (1 or 2 spare, depending on whether Shields can play 8)

Backs:
3 x scrum halves (unusual for Eddie)
2 x 10 (though Slade and Lozowski can cover - I think they are being thought of as OCs)
4 x centres - with a clear intent to play a crash ball at 12 and a second playmaker at 13. Shame Marchant doesn't get a look in.
5 x back 3 (albeit with Daly a potential OC)

No real surprises. Looks like the competition on the flanks is going to be the most intense.

He was definitely dropped. He said so. So did everyone else.

Jones just told reporters that Cipriani isn't in the training side for "rugby reasons"

It's all smoke and mirrors and bull poop.

Jones, the one who made the decision, said he was rested. Danny admitted recently that he wasn't actually dropped although it felt like he was.

Jones says millions of things most of which are deliberately designed to be distracting and not the truth.

The Brighton camp is for probably for Eddie to look at other talent that he may not have seen before or for a long time. You’ll probably find the next squad (Autumn internationals) Cipriani again.

I did initially find it odd however, that if Cipriani is being judged on his rugby, how Ashton ever made it in that squad when he is currently banned/not playing and that was an on field incident. But then I came to the assumption mentioned in my first paragraph.
