ENGLAND HEAD COACH EDDIE JONES HAS NAMED SEVEN HARLEQUINS IN A SQUAD TO TRAIN IN TEDDINGTON LATER THIS WEEKEND

All Quins Academy products, Alex Dombrandt, Jack Kenningham, Louis Lynagh, Joe Marchant, Joe Marler, Sam Riley and Marcus Smith have been named by Jones to take part in a three-day training camp at The Lensbury, Teddington.

Taking place following Harlequins' first home game of the season against Worcester Warriors on Saturday, Quins' players will train with the national side from Sunday to Tuesday (Sept 26-28). Book your tickets for this weekend's return to The Stoop here.

Kenningham, Dombrandt, Marchant and Smith all enjoy call-ups following time in England camp last summer shortly after the Club’s triumphant Gallagher Premiership final win, with the latter trio all featuring in Tests against the USA and Canada in June.

Smith is named by Jones following a sensational finish to the 2020/21 season last summer. After driving Quins to silverware at fly-half, Smith went on to not only earn his first Test cap for England but enjoy a spectacular British and Irish Lions call-up on the summer tour to South Africa. The fan favourite went on to start against The Stormers, claiming 14 points and his first game for the famous touring side.

Talismanic Quins prop Marler links up with England for the first time since December 2020, when he came off the bench to help the national side claim the Autumn Nations Cup title in victory over France.

Riley and Lynagh earn their first senior call-ups for the Red Rose. Both featuring for England at age-grade level having progressed through the Quins Academy, Riley earns his call-up having scored five tries in five matches for England U20 during their 2021 Six Nations campaign.

Lynagh is named by Jones following a breakthrough senior season with Harlequins during the 2020/21 campaign, going on to claim a starting berth in the Premiership final, scoring two tries.

The group will meet at The Lensbury, Teddington from Sunday 26 September until Tuesday 28 September.

It will be the first time England’s new coaching staff will work with the players, after the appointments of Richard Cockerill, Martin Gleeson and Anthony Seibold over the summer.

Eight uncapped players have been named in the training camp squad: Mark Atkinson, Jack Kenningham, Louis Lynagh, Gabriel Oghre, Raffi Quirke, Sam Riley, Bevan Rodd and Ollie Sleightholme.

Nine players who made their debuts in England’s summer series of fixtures have also been selected in: Jamie Blamire, Trevor Davison, Alex Dombrandt, Joe Heyes, Lewis Ludlow, Adam Radwan, Harry Randall, Marcus Smith and Freddie Steward.

There are returns to the squad for senior and experienced players, including England’s second most-capped player Ben Youngs (109 caps), alongside Owen Farrell, Courtney Lawes, Joe Marler, Jonny May and Anthony Watson – all of whom have more than 50 caps.

"This is an exciting squad made up of experienced players and young guys who did well in the summer and earned their place again," said Jones.

"We have left out some experienced players but we’re really clear that the door isn’t closed to them, and we’re looking forward to seeing them work hard to get back into contention.

"We have five campaigns now until the 2023 World Cup so each one counts, and this is a chance for this 45 to impress the new coaching staff."

The camp will form part of England’s preparations for the Autumn Internationals in November, when they will host Tonga [Saturday 6 November, 3.15pm KO], Australia [Saturday 13 November, 5.30pm KO] and world champions South Africa [Saturday 20 November, 3.15pm KO]. All matches will be live on Amazon Prime.

Congratulations to the Quins 7! All well deserved. It's especially good to see Lynagh get the call. Hopefully he'll get a cap & be tied to England. From reading the papers, it appears there's only one on-field training session involved in this call up, so less chance of being injured than in previous EJ training camps thankfully.

Elsewhere, you have to shake your head at Youngs and Farrell still being called up. Plus, I know when fit Tuilagi is a force at 12, but he is an injury magnet. We need to find the replacement to him as you can't guarantee he'll be fit for more than two or three games on the trot nowadays.

I hadn't noticed that. Ford's gotta be the most under-appreciated player for a long time - even more than Robshaw. Quite remarkable, he's one hell of a player and having him and Smith be England's options at 10 makes so much more sense than Smith and Farrell. Farrell's record at 10 for England is rubbish in comparison to Ford's.

Oh, but imagine Marcus having a fit Manu to feed, with Marchant playing off his shoulder and Kenningham hitting the breakdown for Randall to pop to Dombrandt for the offload to Lynagh... or if the defence is marking Manu, hit Sinckler on a reverse line with the second Kenningham there for the offload.

Obviously Farrell is the other ten in the squad besides Marcus but I think it's more a case of Smith over Ford and Farrell to cover 10 and centre. I can see why, he offers something different to Ford and Smith who are very similar in style

Eddie will never drop Farrell, which makes me wonder if Smith will really be allowed to control the game as long as Farrell is in the squad or if Smith will be made to play the way Farrell wants.

Oh, apparently we shouldn't reasd too much into the names that have been left out, so I guess we'll wait and see.

Not sure that's true - Marcus is a high-octane stepping threat with a great short kicking game, Ford is a master game controller with the best tactical kicking game in the business

Only 3 Saracens on there.  I think I saw Daly might be injured, but there's no Jamie George, Billy or Mako Vunipola, Earle and it wouldn't have been a surprise to have seen Malins, Lozowski or Isikwe on this long list.

Just seen this quote in the Guardian from Eddie Jones: "We have left out some experienced players but we’re really clear that the door isn’t closed to them, and we’re looking forward to seeing them work hard to get back into contention."  That makes it sound like it's more than just that he thinks they need a rest or that he knows what they've got to offer.

I've long felt that Ford was ahead of Marcus in kicking - and still is - but Marcus had the wider range of distribution, and I think the gap is now small enough that Marcus's sheer variety as an attacking threat wins out. As we saw repeatedly over the summer, it's hard for teams to defend against a player who has so many options and can choose between them so quickly.

Cool, thanks for that. Not sure what that has to do with Ford and Smith not playing the same style but there you go.
