Absence of Argies
« on: Tuesday 16-Jul-2019, 15:03* »
Seems neither Landajo nor Garcia Botta is in the Argentina plans for the Rugby Championship, at least not for the opening round: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union/2019/07/15/santiago-cordero-among-four-overseas-players-called-argentina/

They were both in the wider 46-man RWC training squad, but the overseas-based players like Cordero were not. Now it has been trimmed to 30 for the weekend's game vs NZ. Does this potentially bode well for the Quins and mean we stand to have them available from the very start of this season and not just post-Japan?

From Landajo's signing announcement:

"Landajo will team up with Harlequins from Jaguares following the World Cup in Japan, if selected for the Argentina national squad, and will look to make his debut for the London Club at The Stoop from November 2019."

Hopefully, he may join before November if he doesn't get picked.

From what I’ve seen neither have player for Jaguares this season.  I think we need Botta especially with Marler back with England.

I would agree - especially with Boyce now departed. Though it's slightly concerning that they weren't good enough to break into the Jaguares set up, especially given how well they did. Know they've been signed as back up rather than first choice starters but still... Landajo possibly a bit past his sell by date, Botta not quite the player he probably had the potential to be?

Let's not have a downer on them just yet BH, let them get into the set up and show us what they've got to offer.

I know you weren't trying to be negative but.......

Gosh, this is rather worrying though, isn't it? Gussy must have known that though, right? And must have his reasons why signing them was a good decision ...?

Also, for perspective, Jaguares is essentially the Argentina squad. So being on the fringes of the Jaguares squad is similar to (although I'm not saying it equates to) being on the fringes of the Argentina squad.

I don't know enough about the reasons why they haven't been playing though. Did someone say one of them had been injured for the majority of the recent season? That, to me, is more worrying. But let's wait and see what they bring - in Gussy we trust... For now.

Think Landajo broke his jaw earlier in the season??.  I also think the fact they may be moving on had something to do with it.  When the rumour about Botta joining first came about, it also mentioned that Quins also wanted him to retire from internationals as part of the deal (So he is around more).  Both seem quality players to me.  To call Landajo over the hill is a bit silly, he is younger than Care.

Wasn’t meaning to be down, and obviously look forward to seeing what they can do - whole point of the thread was to highlight the hopeful positive of their earlier-than-expected availability. Garcia Botta started all three of Argentina’s November internationals so clearly not a shabby player. While it would be reassuring to see them more central to the Jaguares and Argentinian set ups, it could be massively to Quins’ advantage to have them from the season’s start

They stopped appearing for Jaguares pretty much when they signed for Quins.

That's interesting, so at face value at least, this is good news for us.

Argentina squad formally announced and this did indeed come to pass - no Garcia Botta or Landajo. Which is good news for Quins, one would assume. They may still be on injury standby, of course, but hopefully they can get themselves up to London sooner than expected and contend for matchday squad places from the very start of the season - Garcia Botta in particular would be useful given Marler will be in Japan.

Separately, good news for England is the inconceivable absence of Isa, Cordero and Imhoff from their 31. Can’t think of a squad in the whole tournament that wouldn’t be strengthened by their inclusion.
