Accessing the DHL (East) Stand
« on: Wednesday 31-Jul-2019, 19:13* »
Hi gang, my first post on here. I’ve been a Quins fan for donkeys years but due to working patterns have not been able to be a regular over at the Stoop.
My work patterns have changed and I now also have an 11yo son that is getting into rugby so I want to get over there much more.
My problem is that I have a mobility issue which means I struggle with stairs that don’t have a handrail. We got tickets for the South Stand last year against Saints and I was comfortable at about Row T but I’d prefer to get some seats and maybe some season tickets in the DHL stand.

Finally, my question - Is there access to the top rows of the DHL stand from the bars/corporate boxes or would I have to access those top seats from pitch level?
Sorry if this seems a bit long winded but I have to plan my access to sporting stadia so I don’t end up doing a Frank Spencer down the stairs.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Sorry but no hand rails on east stand and access is from the front - none via boxes.

Roughly central and first one or two rows of the East stand is actually a surprisingly good view despite how low you are (although you do need to put up with people loitering in front of you towards the end of the halves).

I've since moved to cheaper seats, but used to sit there with a friend who struggled with stairs.

I'm sure the staff would let you visit in the week should you call up... Then you could explore and find your best compromise.

Good luck.

Thank you, IQPH. We’ll try our luck just a few rows up and if we like it I’ll probably get season tickets if they’re still available.

Doesn't the West stand have lifts?

Be prepared to get rained on in the first 7 rows.

There is a disabled area at the back of the West stand - South end - which is accessible by lift. I think you need to be in a wheelchair.

It is a wheelchair viewing platform. I've been trying to switch there for years but the chaps up there are debentures I believe and there's only space for something like 3 wheelchairs and their plus ones.

It's one feature of the proposed new stadium I want to know about - too often stadiums just mark out front row spaces for wheelchair users but there should be a range of options just as there are for able-bodied supporters. I'd pay the extra money for a seat with a better viewing position (higher up) but they need to be available in the first place!

I think it's worth contacting the club on this. I sit in the back row of the east stand and I have seen a couple of less mobile spectators come in that way, but they may have long standing club relationships.

Yes but there is no lift in the East stand you have to go up the stairs to get there I think.

To be fair, the original design of the West Stand had no wheelchair viewing platform and it was only complaints from the fans got what little we have. There's disabled seating at the front of the Wed for wheelchair users +1. This has less traffic than the East because they shut the gates in the middle during the game and it's a bit of entertainment to see the people being told, no they won't open the gates especially for them.

It's less traffic - unless you're a wheelchair user sitting on the front row near the tunnel and miss the first few mins of the game because of the huddle of people waiting for the gates to reopen. I was that idiot for a season. Now I sit in the east stand.

I'm not having a go at The Stoop in isolation. It happens everywhere - wheelchairs go on the front row. Usually in the rain - as the first few rows are always going to be less covered - and usually with an obscured view for large parts of the game because of people walking to/from the bars, food stalls, toilets. But hey, at least you can say you've provided the spaces.

If you're an able-bodied supporter you have the option of paying less for those front row seats and you accept that's what you get for your money - but you also have the option to chuck out a little more cash, sit higher up and have a fully-unobstructed view and not get soaking wet in the winter months. In an ideal world, people like myself would have a similar range of options. Obviously, it's not an ideal world and I'm not here to make you all feel sorry for me, but I will be putting this to Quins. Since they're building a brand new stadium, I'm interested to see if they look for excuses not to provide that range (wheelchair spaces anywhere other than the front row take up more space, which = less seats in the stadium overall, which = less gate potential) or if, as I hope, they're open to discussing how other accessible seating options around the ground might work.

I'd put my name to any petition along those lines, TBQ, should you decide to go that route. As would plenty of friends of mine.

The MadStad, soulless concrete bowl that it is, has wheelchair spaces in one of the corners, a decent way up. I know this, because I used to sit there when my mate played the half-time & post-match gig. We got free seats, and since the place was regularly empty, we just sat there instead (with the wheelchair users' blessing, before anyone gets all Daily Mail on me!). It was easy access to the bar where the gig was, and good enough view.
