Alex Goode 'devastated' to miss out on England's Rugby World Cup squad, vowing to raise his game to another level

Charles Richardson, The Telegraph
15 September 2019 • 7:30am

Alex Goode should have spent all summer basking in the glory of his most successful season to date: a Champions Cup and Gallagher Premiership double with Saracens, as well as the European Player of the Year gong. But, after a two-week party period, the 31-year-old has been brought firmly down to earth by the fact that, as far as Eddie Jones is concerned, his domestic glitz has meant diddly-squat.

Goode was not included in England's 31-man squad for the upcoming World Cup in Japan, nor was he included in the wider training squad that was named in June. Despite having the whole of the summer to stew and get over not having the opportunity to add to his 21 caps in Japan, the omission still does not sit well with him.

“I’m devastated about it, really,” Goode told Telegraph Sport.

“For the first time in a long time I really got my hopes up about being in the squad, after having thought for years that [Eddie Jones] was not going to pick me. I allowed myself to believe that I might be able to sneak in and prove my worth in training. But it’s just not happened.

“The reason why I’m more disappointed than I have been in a long time is because England have such a great opportunity. They’re going to do exceptionally well at this World Cup and could easily win it.

“That’s made me even more disappointed not to be there - so it is tough. But, it’s not the first time, I’ve dealt with it for a long time and I know I can take my form to another level.

How much higher can get that level get? The Saracens full-back has been in ravishing form for his club; ubiquitous in all their triumphant campaigns since he arrived at the academy in 2006. He is a one-club man - an increasing rarity in the modern game - and fits seamlessly into Saracens’ attacking contingent.

Goode suggests, however, that his style of play - based on a high skill level and shrewd rugby intelligence - might be what is holding him back on the international stage.

“I think you can see, in Eddie’s choices at the moment - with Mike Brown not there either - he wants out-and-out, pure speed at full-back, whether they are people who play full-back all the time or not, he wants speed. That’s not a dig, he just wants pure speed and that’s where his priority is,” he said.

The silver lining for Goode, following his persistent England snubs is that he is able to fall back on one of English rugby's most highly-revered and respected environments at Saracens.

“For a long time I have been putting all my efforts into Saracens,” he said. “When you get disappointment or rejection, you put all of your effort into your club, and winning for Saracens means even more for me because of that. Winning here means so much.

“Ultimately, being on the Saracens field and winning with that group of guys means everything to me - it’s the only club I’ve ever been at - and that’s where I put all my time and effort, as well as the disappointment.”

I think he has every right to feel aggrieved as does Mike Brown, especially as they are both the clear best FBs in the GP, even if no room for both you’d have thought 1 would have gone.

I'd agree, I would always pick Brown ahead of Goode, but if Brown isn't picked you'd expect Goode to be. Eddie hasn't got a full time full back in his team at all.

I’m of the opinion that Goode isn’t even the best 15 at his club.
