An Evening with Gussy
« on: Tuesday 12-Feb-2019, 22:29* »
A really lovely do for the fans. Well done and thank you to the Quinssa for putting it on.

I was blown away by Gussy's clarity of thinking and his attention to detail. Even more so by his humour and humanity. I walked out feeling like we are going to win the league!

Echoed thanks from me too.

Agree with comet, Gustard seems like the perfect coach: a hard, but fair task master.

I get the impression that some of the guys we've not seen play as often as we thought we should will be off come the end of the season. He was quite pointed about losing respect for people who give up; albeit disguising his comments as an anecdote from his time at the Not Nots.

Also alluded to some squad members having no banter, but quickly moved on, so leaving his audience wanting as to whom.

Seems like a jolly nice chap who'd be fun to have at your table in the pub.

Yeah, he was excellent. Played his cards close to his chest but made it pretty clear that if they hadn't got a look in he didn't have time for them.

Liked his comment about being surprised to find out there was a salary cap!

Sounds like it was a great evening and Gustard a sound all round good guy. With regards to players who have featured little this season or not at all, I wonder if Catrakilis will be one to go?

Should think it's inevitable unless he is still under contract.

He gave a good insight into the amount of data and analysis that he is using to ensure they train with upcoming opposition in mind , he was asked about having a Plan B and said there were various options and he was empowering players to ' find a way' out of situations .

He swerved all questions about players coming in or going with a 'watch this space'

He also cleared up the NZ alliance form his perspective , he said it was principally  a coaching exchange and not really player related - apparently we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for Brodie Retallick !

Came across as a straight talking guy that leads by example and has no time for those that don't give 100%  or set their own goals for improvement  .

Very interesting , informative and amusing session .. thanks to Quinssa for another success.

yes, a very informative and amusing evening. Many thanks to QUINSSA for organising it. If next time you could crank up the raffle machine to draw numbers over 100, it would be appreciated!

That question was mine (for all those stalkers wanting to know my real life identity).

I asked something along the lines of:
"In previous seasons we have noticed from the stands what appeared to be a lack of a Plan B. This has clearly changed this season. Is that because you give the players a Plan B as well as a Plan A? Or because you are coaching the players to be better at making decisions on the fly?"

The answer included points such as:
1. Plan A was provided in the form of "most likely scenarios that would be encountered, and how to deal with them". So not defined, but directed.
2. There was no Plan B.
3. Players were encouraged, and trained to "find a way" (as Chipstead Quin mentioned). This included Gustard throwing possible scenarios from the forthcoming game(s) into the prior training sessions, and trying to keep the players on their toes (also tied into "keeping it fresh"; another key theme of his coaching mindset. See below).
4. The coaches do analyse the threats they are likely to encounter from the next game, and do focus on those. For example talking about how Worcester slowed the ball down illegally at the breakdown, and how to counter that. So this is not a set in stone approach, but a flexible one.

So in answer to my original question, still no Plan B, but also, not quite free reign - more a delicate balance between the two. The solution was clearly well thought through, and a deliberate technique. From my seat in the South Stand, it appears to be working!

Regarding the "Keeping it Fresh" principle, Gustard mentioned that it was important that the players did not get a chance to feel like they were going through the same old stuff every day. To avoid this, they train on different fields, in different locations, mix up the times of training, the overall feel of training, the location and setup of meetings (stand-up, walk-through, etc...). They also get a week off each, the opportunity to have days off for life events, flexibility where needed, etc...

My girlfriend turned to me recently and said she actually quite fancies him. I think I do too given what he seems to be doing with the squad...

I do him, but I’d be thinking about the Robshaw twins.

still no Plan B...

Well, "Plan B" depends on what's in front of them, so more like TCUP/adapt to what's happening...

Sort of what I was trying to say, sorry!

There is no set plan to use of the first plan doesn't work... The fall back plan is to play what's in front of you.

I'm not sure I'm articulating this very well!

Good thing I'm not the coach

Ronan O'Gara sort of rubbished the idea of a Plan B in his analysis of Ireland's defeat to England. Maybe Plan B is more of a fan thing than a coach thing.

I've always thought this - if it was as simple as that and everyone had a "plan B" then almost every game would swing one way, then the other, then back and so forth... Gussy seems to have good common sense where this is concerned - drill the players and give them the tools and scenario experience to be able to swing momentum away from the opposition when things aren't going so well.
