Barrett Bros to Quins?
« on: Friday 26-Apr-2019, 09:55* »
Obviously a long distance, second hand rumour, but a pal of mine, based in Wellington and long term Canes supporter says there's lots of local chat in the last few days about the Barrett Bros - B & J - having agreed a 12 month sabbatical with the NZRU post World Cup are now in serious discussions with a London club, assumed to be Harlequins.

Probably highly speculative, but wouldn't that be something!? Even on a one season deal.

Yeah I'm actually more interested in Jordie - he can play across the back line but primarily at full back. That's just the right signing. Beauden would just limit Marcus' development - although I suppose it is only for a year. And that's the other thing - is a year really enough time for the club to get a return on investment?

I imagine Rugbyinsdieline will pick this up as a "exclusive inside info" after reading it here.

I don't see why not. We'd only pay for a year of his time.

Pretty happy that marcus' development would be just fine training alongside one of the best in the world.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't sniff at the chance of this coming true. Being able to rotate Marcus with Beauden is a totally different ball game to rotating him with Lang/Herron. So yeah, actually the more i think of it the more I just want both of them. But if it was a choice between the two I'd take Jordie (who can also play 10).

But also, before we all get ahead ourselves, there is another "London club" already in the Prem of course.

Is it plausible that Sarries could afford this (yes, even with their "clever accountancy" tricks) with all the other big names in their squad? I can certainly see why they might have a space for Beauden - would allow Farrell to switch to 12.

But Alex Goode and Liam Williams have the 15 shirt locked up and with Daly incoming as well as Lozowski, Tompkins et al, I can't see where Jordie would fit.

So that's a probable no to Sarries.

BUT... I'm worried about London Irish. Would be an absolute coup, but they will be nowhere near the cap with their current squad so will have more room to splash the cash than most others (and more motivation to in not wanting to yo-yo). Could it be them? I know they're not technically a London club at all next season but I can see that they might still be considered as one in NZ, where this rumour is apparently bubbling away.

It's all just speculation anyway, but by deduction it's between us and Irish I think.

If there were cap issues then we could always go into a property or other business deal with them to help fund their living, that is all outside of the salary cap.

I don't care how long they would be here for,  Id be happy to see either of these two in the quarters for 1 game, let alone a season.  From watching Super Rugby, they are another level altogether.

I thought Beauden was going to Japan after the world cup, pretty sure I read that somewhere anyway.

He's been the subject of speculation for over a year but his whereabouts post-WC haven't been confirmed yet. It came out that any NZRU contract post-WC would likely have a sabbatical written into it and then the rumour mill went mad. But as yet, no official announcement on where he's going and whether or not he will leave NZ rugby for a number of years or wangle a year in Europe/Japan on a cushy paycheck and then be back with the Hurricanes.

Re: the cap, with Horwill retiring a year early, we almost certainly have at least one marquee slot open.

Personally, I would love to see how Marcus would develop with Beauden to learn from. I've been impressed by how much he's learned already - the improvement in his defence shows that he's clearly willing and able to pick things up quickly.
