11th January 2021  Steven
2. Marcus Smith

Bath have reportedly launched a huge move to try and sign Harlequins star, according to the Mail Online. The 21-year-old, who has also been linked with a move to Lyon in the Top 14, will be out of contract in 2021 when his current three-year contract comes to an end.

Smith, who currently earns £230k per season, is one of the most exciting prospects in world rugby could potentially double his earning to around half a million with his next move. Bath, who are desperately short of fly-halves, have seen moves for other high-profile fly-halves, such as Handre Pollard and Finn Russell, fail in recent times.

DID YOU KNOW? Born in the Philippines to a British father and a Filipina mother, Smith picked up the game of rugby union at the age of seven with Centaurs RFC when his family moved to Singapore.

This is taken from the ruck website and the source it references is the daily mail article from November. I don’t think there’s any new news to report here.

I know this is only a rumour and clubs probably bid on players all the time with no move ever coming about, but it is crucial we hang on to Smith. No positive spin could be put on him leaving, and there are few 10s in the world I'd be happy with as his replacement if he did leave

Agree 100%. If the offer is right then I'm confident he'll sign. He is a guaranteed starter and in the leadership group already. He would also only be circa 24/25 after on expiry of the contract extension, so plenty of time to have a better shot at silverware if Quins haven't moved forward by then.

Bath would be a sideways move. Plus the Rec pitch is a bog and wouldn't suit him.

Of all the rumours this is the worst for Quins you can replace the others but Marcus has an X factor that cannot be replaced we must keep him and build our team around his skills, he also embodies the free flowing Quins style of old.

Yep, nothing to see here, move along.

Exeter or Sarries and possibly Wasps else he achieves nothing by moving. Along with Dombrandt and possibly Murley, I'd pay them what they want to stay and build a future.

Marcus is such good box office, we’ll just have to get used to such rumours.

An incredibly bright light in a (so far) dull season. If any player can be considered a "must keep", he's one of them.

Think I might add Northmore to that list

Its funny, if you read the Bath forum (I do like a nose at other teams every now and again) they are talking about their potential transfer Business.  From what I can gather it seems -

Smith - No chance they will sign him
Hooper - has lost the dressing room, some coaching disagreements with senior players
Obano/Mercer Leaving - why not, they wont win trophies with Bath etc, will want to play for better team

Sounds familiar!!!

This. As I said on another thread, this is the reality for two thirds of all Prem clubs at any given point in the season, so why not take the negatives as read and just enjoy the positives!

Just seen Bath have signed a SA fly half from the Cheetahs who looks to be their first choice fly half. Can’t see them after Smith anymore.

They are still after him. Not confirmed his future anywhere yet and believe his contract is up for renewal in June.

We need to throw money at him to stay

Why would they be? With their new signing and a highly rated fly half in their academy in Bailey, I can’t see much point of signing Smith on big money.

How do you know they are still after him?
