What are you on about?! He's got plenty of ongoing work. There's no shame in waiting for the right role. He'll do well in his next full time position.

I think he's bitter towards the RFU, quite rightly. Why arrogant though? Interested.

If he's offered to appear on TV and get paid for it, why should it matter that he accepts?

A lot of jealous people around.

I'm not sure how jealousy could possibly come into it.

Ryan's arrogant because 90% of the time he's setting himself up as the big know-all who can solve rugby's ills all on his own. Which is odd given his impact in the game is restricted to being a good 7s coach and not much else.

He's a top sevens coach and I respect him for that. I get it that he's not everyone's cup of tea but I don't get the need for all the bile against him.

It's tiring having someone constantly be in the media railing against pretty much everything in the sport and positioning himself as some kind of guru

What on earth has jealousy go to do with it?

When has he 'set himself up as the big know-all who can solve rugby's ills all on his own'? He's highlighting, and continues to do so, a blatant problem within rugby that nobody else with any sway is bothering to address. When has he claimed to be able to solve all of rugby's problems?

JG, what else has he rallied against? If you don't like him that's fine but at least have legitimate reasons. This rhetoric from you and BQ is just odd.

Not sure BQ, you tell me? I can't find any other reason for such a strong dislike of a man who wants to make the ruck safer and is doing his best to campaign for it.

Well I’m not jealous because I’m not interested in coaching rugby or being on BT sometimes.

“Man who wants to make the ruck safer” is exactly why I dislike him,

In my view, if it wasn’t that he’d find something else with which to paint himself as the rebellious outsider who is being stifled by the system.

It’s classic. And if he gets a mainstream coaching gig it’ll vanish in a heartbeat.

For now it’s earning him money - so fair play - but I don’t buy it. Hence he annoys the hell out of me.

That’s it really. Only occurred to me because he was on BT on Friday night and I found him massively irritating. I’m sure he’s not my biggest fan either.

What?! You dislike him because he wants to make the ruck safer? What an odd thing to say.

Why is he 'rebellious' or being 'stifled' for wanting to penalise players that go flying into rucks off their feet, extremely dangerously, to stop it from becoming a weekly occurrence?

He's been going on about it for a long time, while coaching full-time, I suspect he just has more time to make it a priority now. Which is great.

Very strange that you see it as some sort of self-serving arrogance and threat to your enjoyment. But good luck to you anyway!

No I dislike him for painting himself as the only person who wants to make the ruck safer - and trying to position it as if the rugby authorities are against helping players.

It isn’t true, and it’s classic tactic to get yourself in the media. As soon as he’s booked once on a show to talk about it he then becomes, by default, “the making the ruck safer” guy.

It’s clearly worked. But it’s unrepresentative of the truth at best.

That's fine to say that but can you name me another person with his profile that is highlighting the same ruck problems as he is? It's so simple to make the ruck safer so it seems to me that he probably is the only one. All it would take is for referees to be directed to penalise illegal clearouts and they'd stop. It's almost like there's a concerted effort to turn a blind eye to it all.

Ryan has also noted how his outspokenness on the subject has probably put him out of the running of a few key jobs that he probably would have liked. He's principled and I like that, especially when it's for a cause that's so important.

If you listen to some of the pods, the problem with the ruck is a constant bugbear to many.

For example, Tom Shanklin regularly talks about how his career was ultimately ended when he got cleaned out on the back of the neck at a ruck. Chris Jones and Ugo often talk about the need for change. But nobody wants to drive the agenda as I suspect it is being done by clubs at Head Coach level in a quieter, more considered manner.

But Ryan has some good ideas. He gets invited on TV to talk about them and to promote a debate. Where's the big drama?

No drama. Just think he's more interested in promoting Ben Ryan.

All part of life's great tapestry.

For example some people like Matt Dawson.

I mean they must.

Right?

Coz otherwise why?
