Ben Ryan
« on: Friday 15-Feb-2019, 19:10* »
On BT at the moment talking about this Rugby X thing.

Despite all the guff written about him, I find him immensely irritating and self-satisfied with a weird sense of entitlement and a vast unfettered self publicist.

His current lack of job makes me think I’m not alone.

The main person who has taken his sevens win as an indicator he’s some kind of Yoda coaching guru is himself.

In fact he’s now claiming to be the only person who feels there’s something wrong with rugby around clearing out at the breakdown.

“It’s one simple change......”

Very very glad he’s not at Quins.

Have to disagree. Everything he says about the breakdown I agree with

Not sold at all on rugby X though. We'll see

I read his autobiography and he's really rude about his ex parents in law which I thought made him come across z in his own book, like a bit of a callous pr...

On the breakdown though I'm completely with him. It is a massive mess

Didn’t say I disagree about the breakdown - but he’s painting himself like he’s the outsider that no one will listen to.

He’s clearly just a **** that no one will employ.

I really like him. The reason he worked so well with a team like Fiji is because took time to know the players and their families that isn't necessarily required with an England or a Scotland. The Fijians are so different from us and he worked hard to meet them on their terms rather than his and learn what makes them tick, so he got the absolute best out of them.

He's absolutely right on the breakdown and he's also the only high profile character in the game who *persistently* beats that drum. I'm glad he's doing it because it needs somebody of his stature to draw attention to it. He's also quite right in that he's not being listened to by World Rugby or the refereeing panel. It's barely officiated week in, week out and there's absolutely no reason for it not to be. So many dangerous acts in total contrast to the laws go completely unpunished.

On top of that, I don't know him personally but have interacted with him and I can confirm that he's a genuinely lovely man - he went above and beyond to do something very kind for me that he really didn't have to do and he wasn't asked by me to do so.

I don't think he's right for a DoR or head coach role with a Premiership side though, as I think you need a bit more bite and growl - someone that can put a rocket up players. I could be wrong but I don't think that's something he'd offer. But as a Manager or consultant I think he's one of the best.

It's also a common misconception that he's out of work. He does a lot of ongoing consultancy work and I imagine he's very well paid for it!

Also, who on earth likes their in-laws?! Let alone ex in-laws!!!!

Why should he be listened to?

I’m sure he may well be charming but he’s very clever at PR and I don’t get it.

Because he's been a successful coach at elite level quite recently?

Erm, because what he's saying is absolutely correct. That's why.

There are are an unlimited number of illegal and dangerous clearouts that just get let go every weekend and it needs fixing urgently.

He acts like he’s the only person who cares about it - he’s like the Nigel Farage of rugby.

At the Olympics, in 7s, and hasn’t had a job since. It’s the sense that he’s somehow some kind of Moneyball genius that utterly eludes me.

He’s realised that if you cast yourself as the righteous outsider it gets you coverage.

Not having a job since (presumably you mean a hands on coaching job) is irrelevant.

I'd not heard about rugby X. Must have missed the memo. Doesn't look like I missed much!

He's an excellent 7s coach who comes across as extremely bitter, extremely arrogant, and loves to get himself in the media. I think we dodged a bullet by not hiring him.

Thank you - that’s my point entirely.

I agree about him being a good 7s coach, and yes he did well with Fiji but, so he should.  They are one of the best sides in the world.  They are always there or there abouts anyway. It was no major shock they won the gold.  As for why is he not working now, I think he does pretty well with his consultant/TV work etc.

He might be the only person with his profile who cares about it, because I don't see anybody else with his platform speaking up?

How do you suppose it's fixed if nobody is willing to talk about it? He's the only one persistently banging the drum and with respect, it doesn't matter if you or me agree with him, as we don't have his platform!
