Is it only 10 years? I had consigned that to ancient history!

What point is there in forgetting it? It happened. I can't be bothered to listen to it but I'd be interested to know what the new evidence is. I thought it was pretty much all out in the open by the end.

I don't believe Deano was unique. The question I have often pondered is - were other clubs were also using blood substitutions in this way?

There were definitely stories of players, usually props, being deliberately cut and stitched before a game, so that they could unpick the stitches during a game to get a break, bring on a fresh prop for 10 minutes while the cut was closed up again, then come back on and be replaced again as a "proper" substitution later on. That way a prop's load was eased and spread across the game with breaks, and each prop had a breather. It was commonly known as "shift work"...

I do reckon, the way the game is going, we could see rolling subs in the future. Not necessarily ala Rugby League. I quite like the idea of having the same number of subs as there are currently - so the makeup of a bench would look just like it does now - but without the "he's gone off so he can't come back on" rule in place. It makes a lot more sense in terms of player welfare and actually makes the game potentially more interesting from a tactical point of view. The only thing that would really need working out is making sure it doesn't cause crazy amounts of hard stoppages in play - which it easily could of course. Food for thought with all the player welfare issues kicking around these days though. When players are more tired, it feels that worse injuries are more likely.

You only had to look at the stats for uncontested scrums, when they were easy to obtain, and then in the seasons when they weren't. When did you last see an uncontested scrum?

Isn’t the argument usually the exact opposite of this? If a player knows he only has to last a shorter amount of time, he can be bigger which means worse injuries.

My extrapolation from a very amateur level is that bigger players also lead to more stoppages as players look for ways to have a breather. Laces untied, contact lens dislodged, etc.

As Fearless Fred said, there are strong rumours of various nefarious activities in this area. But I'm not aware of any team putting on a pantomime in quite the same way we did. :)

It will be interesting to see if it’s another hatchet job on us or a more balanced look at what used to go on up to international level. Having read many players books even before “bloodgate” it would seem that it did. Brian Moore’s account of what went on was revealing. I wonder if he contributed to the program.

Yeah, althought I can see the logic, I don't necessarily go along with the argument that players would get massive. I'd like to think that teams would still want to play with pace and the modern game has seen props transformed from set piece semi-mobile furniture to serious athletes. Add too much more bulk and the pace you lose only limits your game as a team. But I may well be wrong and it's impossible to know without it happening, of course.

The stoppages would be the worry for me but I'm sure there are ways of ensuring that's minimised. It's all theoretical anyway - there hasn't been any actual talk about this recently as far as I'm aware - was more a passing thought.

A hint as to the prevalence of such activity in the sport at the time of that whose name cannot be mentioned can be found in the fact that the oppo Medico was instantly hammering on the door demanding to inspect the injury.

I have a relation who was working at Newcastle Falcons at the time and he said all clubs were doing it. It was just unlucky it was Quins who were the ones who got caught doing it first.
