However much he loves the job, how long would it be before that began to affect him?

Didn't realise that. Makes a big difference.

He's been doing that since he started playing for us. Remember the game (against Saints?) when he was a late call-up to the bench then had to be subbed on after a couple of minutes to play (very well!) at Loosehead for nearly the whole match? He drove up from Wales that morning after getting the call to say he was needed!

Yes but I think he was actually on way back to Wales having been released and had to turn around as someone failed a test before the match

Having commuted around just the southern part of the M25 to/from work for years i can fully empathise with anyone who also commutes a distance as it really does get to you as that extra (minimum) 3 hours a day plus a full day in the office really adds to the stress and affects your family life detrimentally and ultimately no job, as the last 4 months has proved,  is worth it.

Priorities should be imho Family, health, enjoying life and finally wealth.

I agree! I did 8 years of commuting from Wantage in S. Oxon to the outskirts of Fareham & back every day. I calculated that I drove the distance from the Earth to the Moon & started on the way back in that time. When you're leaving the house at 7am & getting home at 7pm earliest, your life ends up devolving into Sleep-Drive-Work-Drive-Eat-Sleep during the week, with no chance to actually sit down & unwind. So glad I'm now working much closer to home...

Indeed, but the effects can accumulate over a period of time. As with other posters, I've had jobs that required a long daily commute (although nowhere near as bad). The work around was to leave home at 7am and leave work after 6pm. It cuts into your life after a while, especially when traffic jams/accidents etc occasionally add hours to an already long journey.

I don't know his family situation, nut if he has kids for example, I'd say that the time away must really take its toll.

So as a management consultant I've had, in the 15 years since my kids first started arriving, 5 years of commuting to Edinburgh on a weekly basis, 2 years of commuting to Manchester on a weekly basis, 6 months of commuting to Swindon on a weekly basis, 6 months of commuting to China on a monthly basis and a year of commuting to India on a 6-8 weekly basis.

Sometimes it wasn't ideal, but we have coped pretty well, mostly by not taking work home for the weekend. As we enter the 4th month of lockdown, it's probably harder all being stuck at home than at any point except when I was in India. The point being, it's a very individual thing. Some families find it hard to be apart, some families work well with a bit of distance, and even that can change by circumstances.

All of which said, I could understand him wanting to go back to Wales... but for someone like him at the start of his coaching career it may come down more to which club is going to offer him the best opportunity to develop his skills and coaching brand.

I'm astonished, and take my hat off to you. No idea how you managed it.

That was actually the toughest one, after India (where I was working for a man whose idea of a perfect Sunday afternoon was to show up at my hotel room and get me to write his marketing puff). There's *nothing* to do.

That said, I narrowly avoided two years commuting to Newport. Which might work for Bomb, but wouldn't for me.

I had to go to Milkwaukee on a regular basis in the early '00s. It's like Swindon but without the charm...
