Four games seems harsh. I wonder if he pleaded guilty, showed remorse etc

Seems harsh. I am not disputing the red card. But 4 weeks? Really?

Well, all the time since he's been back I've been concerned about him needing that arm guard. Perhaps with 4 weeks without  a real match he can dispense with it. I think it does draw a referees eyes towards it. I have no idea if SMASH is an acronym for something - anyone?

I know he's broken the arm more than once but I'm amazed he's allowed that guard on his forearm. It looks like a cast and is enormous. I'd be worried about getting whacked by it if I was playing against him.

Seems to have hooves for hands and is a penalty-conceding machine. Not convinced by him at all yet but given the amount of rugby he's missed I'm hopeful it'll improve.

I don't see the problem with it. Maybe it looks bad, but if it was a cast then he wouldn't be allowed to wear it. Many players wear guards - it's for support/protection. The whole "SMASH" thing just seems like a bit of panto.

Tom Guest wore an arm guard after his break for the rest of his career, I believe. I'd guess it's partly a psychological thing...

Victor Matfield and Pierre Spies wore similar arm guards.

I don't remember one quite as big as Bothma's though.

I'm talking about the arm guard. Get your minds out of the gutter.

That thing is hefty! Weirdly the one on his right arm which says SMASH looks just like some wrapping. The one on the left looks like you could club someone with it!

I would think it’s like the stuff you lag your pipes with, maybe with something like a splint at skin level. You might even be better off being hit by that rather than a bare arm.  Didn’t Danger wear bandages on his forearm also with writing on. Not sure what his had written on.

Arm guard or not, smash of not, he led with a forearm into the other guy's face. Intent, malice, etc, is irrelevant. Mid range entry point, so I think 6 week minimum once you please guilty. Couldn't get full reduction due to previous record. I think with full reduction it would have been 3 weeks.

All protective gear has to be "soft", not hard like American Football. So yes, getting a forearm covered in foam rubber may be better than just getting a forearm. If it's designed to lessen the impact on the bloke wearing it, it'll lessen the impact when you run into someone wearing it.
