Just announced

LEWIS BOYCE TO JOIN BATH AT END OF THE SEASON
Friday, 18th January 2019 @ 15:00

PROP TO LEAVE AFTER TWO SEASONS AT QUINS

Harlequins can confirm that Loosehead prop Lewis Boyce will leave the Club at the end of the season to join Bath Rugby.

Boyce signed for the Club for the 2017/18 season from Yorkshire Carnegie. A former England U20 Junior World Cup winner, Boyce has made 28 appearances for the Club scoring two tries.

General Manager (Rugby) Billy Millard said: “We want to thank Lewis for everything he has given to Harlequins and wish him well for his career.”

Can we have Obano in return? Like the look of him.

Im quite relaxed about the in comings.  We know that players will come in. IMHO we are being linked with good players coming in.  I think once the dust has settled, PG will have a pretty useful squad to work with.

Shame to lose him. I find it hard to believe that he was surplus to requirements, or not good enough... Did he want out?

He must have been frustrated at not being the number 1 number 1. With Marler  retiring from England,  Boyce was always going to be league back up/prem cup starter. A real shame for him and us but good luck and best wishes.

Shame he’s going as I think he and Joe could have shared the position giving both plenty of game time and kept them fresh. Is he going to be no 1 at Bath?

Yes, but i don’t know if Joe would want to share the money. We can’t afford to pay two number one players for each position.

Is he going to be no.1 loosehead for Bath? I’m not so sure. He’s closer to Catt and Obano than he is to Marler, but both would feel that they have a legitimate claim to being first choice. I don’t see that he has improved his situation at all. 28 games in just over 1.5 seasons hardly suggests he is being under-utilised either.

It could well be the case that PG has decided to let him move on by not offering a new deal.  My impression of PG is that he knows exactly what he wants, and gets it.  He may have to break a few eggs to make the Quins omelette. I have no doubts that next years squad will be better than this years on paper (may be a bit smaller) but with what he is doing with this squad, I think we can be excited for the future.
Re Boyce, I may be being a little unfair here but, if it was his choice to go seems a little like "throwing in the towel" because Marler will be around a bit more now.  Would not surprise me to hear in a few seasons that he is leaving Bath for first team chances.

Yes seems to be because of Marler a real shame.

I can't understand why Boyce would leave solely because Marler has decided to quit Internationals - it would present the perfect way to learn from a world-respected prop and get game time every week as No 2 to Marler and even start games, as Gus does like to rotate. Marler has a record of disciplinary issues (which we all wish would go away), but there is every chance that he'd plenty of opportunity to play. Unless Gus sees Aurterac as No 2 or Boyce wants to go elsewhere.

One way of looking at Marler retirement effecting Boyce - is the amount of money Quins WANT to spend on Marler's back up - previously we needed a guy who could play half a season at top level - as Marler would be away with England. Possibly the belief is that, barring injury, we can have a less expensive option - because he will get less game time. Could be a more experienced player, who is happy being a bench rider....

If that money can be put somewhere else - then it improves the squad.
