How ridiculous. The premiership final has already been booked in. It is not down to the clubs to cater for the Lions for the biggest match of the season. If the Lions insist on going ahead with this pointless cash cow then make do with the players they have available.

No reason why the final should be moved, but I don't really understand why the premiership clubs not involved wouldn't release their players? It won't detract from the premiership final really. I'm sure the players would like to play for the Lions if not involved in the final.

The Lions admin do try to pull on the heartstrings a bit in these situations, and make all other unions and organisations out to be the bad guys. It is a shame that there seems to be so little room for compromise

I can see both sides of this, tbh. The Prem is trying to fit in a full season in a truncated period of time already, so it's hard to see where they can pull in any time to bring the final forward apart. That said, there should be some give in terms of releasing non-final players for the Lions. My gut feel is that PRL are loath to do that as it would open up the demand for greater access to non-English players outside the International Windows from the other nations, jeopardising the money they receive from the RFU for access to English players outside the Windows (The RFU will say "You released players free to the Lions, why won't you do that for us?").

As for the game against Japan, I think it's a good thing in that Japan missed out on England touring this summer. I was personally looking at going on the official supporters tour as it would've been something different from the usual locations. It will also give the Lions squad some gametime before reaching SA.

Thing is, the Lions exists first and foremost to make money. It's a cynically capitalist enterprise these days. "Doing it for the fans" is a smokescreen. Pay them!

The money goes to charities like Great Ormond Street, to ex-Lions players in difficulties and any extra from the tours to the four home unions. It's a money making exercise sure, but the money goes to good causes.

Those dastardly cynical capitalistic charity fundraisers and their smokescreens!

I predict that some deal will be done down the line with some money being paid to PRL for release of players not in the final.  The PRL are just defending the deal the they have with the RFU, that brings in vital money for the clubs.  If they give in for nothing then why should the RFU pay up or the other nations not get access outside the windows.  Let's face it the other home nations are not ever going to pay

No, the vast amount of money generated goes to the company operating the tour, Lions Rugby Travel, the various parasitical companies that hang onto it, the broadcasters, the host nation, and the home unions (who definitely aren't a charity). The % the charities get is miniscule in comparison. They do some small fundraisers - it's a separate thing to the revenue generated by the tours.

e.g. https://www.lionsrugby.com/2016/11/29/british-irish-lions-partner-with-great-ormond-street-hospital-childrens-charity/

a couple of dinners to raise money for charity - nothing like the huge sums the Lions tour generates.

Each Lions tour generates millions of pounds in turnover, with revenues pouring in from major sponsorship deals, tourism and other events such as high-profile gala dinners. It is estimated that the Lions turn over about $50m (£39m) in each four-year cycle between tours.

I cannot find any evidence that any decent proportion of those huge sums goes to charitable causes. Profits go to the unions (and we all know what they're like with the money!), but of course profits come after that cake has been sliced a number of ways...
