champions cup prospects
« on: Sunday 10-Nov-2019, 10:16* »
Reading on twitter that our last 11 Premiership league games we have won 2 and lost 9
That’s the same as under JK for his last 11 games in premiership

Now I don’t think we need to panic so early into the season, but never the less it’s an interesting stat and we now have to play in Champions cup
I don’t see us winning away at Clermont who have in their last 9 games won 5 and lost 4 currently sitting 6 in top 14
Ulster currently sit 2nd in Pro14, having won 4 and lost 2
Bath currently have won 2 and lost 2 this season and look to be improving having beaten Saints yesterday

Other teams seem to be improving, I thought we played well at Exeter and could have won the game, but the last 3 games I think we have gone backwards after that performance
If we play the same does anyone believe we will get out of the pool?

So hard to tell.  Im not ready to write us off just yet.  I would say in that group, anyone can beat anyone and BPs could be vital

No, I struggle to see us getting out of the pool. Clermont would rightfully be favourites, Ulster second and us and Bath battling it out for 3rd/4th would be my supposition. A couple of LBPs here and there may help but I don't think we've got quite enough. It'd be just like Quins to pull some rabbits out of a few hats though.

In general, it looks like the injury curse is in full swing already and we're playing with a real lack of sense at the moment.

Personally, I don't think we're as bad as the last couple of games suggest, nor is all that rosy. I think we've over rotated (either by design or necessity) and we've got so many new combinations pitching up on a week by week basis. Instead of being able to bring players in bit by bit a number have had to be lobbed in at the deep end. Yesterday's starting line up had at least 10 first choice players missing by my reckoning and we lacked any real leadership when things got tough in the second half.

Agreed.

TBH, given the way we’ve started, I feel like the Champions Cup is an unwelcome distraction. There’s no point in winning Champions Cup games when we’re not winning in the Premiership.

I travel in hope to Clermont but expect them to put out a full side, something I’ve noted they haven’t too often this season. Without Care and Brown presumably, we lack in these two positions (amongst others) to compete against a rested and hungry Clermont at home!
Gustard will have us go full out to beat Bath at home. Win and he’ll continue the rotation policy. Lose it and he should shift his attention to saving our necks in the Prem which is going to mean best 23 available each week.
To answer the question, we won’t get out of the pool without our best team available and with the rotation policy in play.

Mind you last Easter we didn’t think the team had much hope, but should have won the game

I think we'll be competing with Bath for last place in the group.

TBH I know the players don’t like it but for me personally I quite the Challenge Cup which we do quite well in! Although probably not 20/21 as Sarries could be there!

There is absolutely no way that we will not finish bottom of the pool with this squad, and no bad thing. It is now imperative that we do everything we can to stay in the Premiership, which on the last two performances (to be generous) is far from assured. Hopefully, Tigers and Wasps will be even more hopeless than us, over the season. The squad is basically way too low-quality. I like Gustard a lot, but...

To be fair we still have a good few games to go, but I agree doesn’t look great
Bristol just beat Chiefs today
London Irish gave Tigers a right kicking and wasps also not doing well
That being said we still have to wonder where we will be after a few more rounds in prem

I’ll be very happy with a good performance on Saturday, don’t expect the win but a good performance to get the excitement back into the season would help

Clermont is not actually in a good mood.
We lost heavily yesterday in Toulouse.
But you are not also, I believe.
We could have some problems, if you are agressive from the beginning.

Stade de France, when was that, 2008? JTH runs the length (ok from the 10). No one gave us a chance......

That’s more than good. I have a strong feeling that without having to worry about England anymore he can just play for Quins and he’ll be even better than last season. He could be pivotal this season.

Pretty poor imho.
Clermont will beat us when they come to the Stoop (on anything like yesterdays showing)
Ulster at Ravenhill is very unlikely to be a win.
On current form we will lose at the wreck!
Therefore ,if we don't beat Barf next Sat (it's a must win for them too!) it's as good as over.
At least then we can concentrate on avoiding relegation .
