I can't believe a lack of fitness was much of a contributory factor.

So we played OK for the first half of the season, all tucked into too much Turkey and Xmas pudding and that was why the second half was a disaster? I'm not sure I can see that as an excuse.

Lack of fitness is a big issue when you look at how we used to keep going to the end of a game and get close to or actually win late on to how we now fall away towards the end and teams will put two or three late tries away losing us any LBP also making it look like we were well tonked. It has also been given as a reason for our poor injury record.

It was identified as an issue later in the season by the BT Sport commentary team, and I recall reading that strength rather than fitness was a priority in training, but can't recall where that was said.

So then surely, if he is right, then the blame for that must be solely and directly attributed to the coaches? Specifically, the Head Coach, if he was focusing on strength rather than fitness? It seems astonishing that Mapletoft (great personal friends with Gustard, it's said) is still in position.

We don't know who was responsible for the conditioning regime. I would have thought it was just as likely to have been set by the DoR, and the Head Coach primarily responsible for tactics. That might explain why several times we looked as if we were trying to do the right things tactically but weren't actually able to execute.

Sorry but we shipped stupid tries so many times in the early stages of the match, I lost count how many games someone ran straight through the middle and scored in under 10 mins. That was nothing to do with fitness, sure it may have meant by the end we were struggling but we had lost the game by then in so many matches. To ship an average of over 4 tries a match for the season, our defence was abysmal, we were chasing in so many games we were knackered by the end, might be a combination affect but not all down to fitness or lack of it.

It's pretty damning for a professional sportsman to come out and say the team wasn't fit enough to execute the plan.  To make that admission, I'm pretty sure it was true.  I'm also sure there were other factors too, but if you know you're not there physically it can lead to all sorts of other errors.

I said last season that fitness was a massive issue. We lost/got hammered in the last quarter of games so often last season.

That Gustard has worked that out so quickly bodes well.

Fitness was absolutely an issue you could see where we fell away in the 2nd half of the season, it also plays a huge part in injury prevention.

Sure there must have been other reasons but a team physically and mentally unfit cannot bounce back.
