Contract renewal speculation
« on: Thursday 02-Feb-2023, 15:11* »
Since we don't have much Quins rugby for the next few weeks, I though maybe some contract speculation might be entertaining.

According to the squad list post (https://comeallwithin.createaforum.com/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=15) and ignoring those we now are leaving, the following last signed contracts in 2021 or before so might be out of contract at the end of this season:

Marler
Hobson (academy)
Musk (academy)
Head (academy)
Jibulu (academy)
Lawday
Kennngham (academy)
Taulani
Alikhan (academy)
Steele
Murray (academy)
Smith (was a "long-term" deal in 2021)
Hyde (academy)
David
Morris
Lynagh
Oresanya (academy)
Cleaves (academy)

A fair few there that I'd hope we can keep! Smith (if the contract isn't for longer already), Marler, Kenningham, David and Lynagh at the top, then at least some of the hookers and maybe Lawday and Steele. Hyde and Cleaves also look like good academy prospects, maybe others will know the academy in more detail.

Agreed - need to keep Lawday as well !

Yup, we really see his worth when he's been unavailable for a while.

If I were to reorder that list into a renewal priority list, it would look something like:

Smith
Marler
Kenningham
Lynagh
Lawday
David
Head
Musk
Cleaves
Hyde
Murray
Jibulu
Hobson

Wouldn't mind if released:

Morris
Steele
Taulani
Alikhan
Oresanya

Wow, Oresanya? He's right up there with Cleaves IMO.

Yeah - it is a bit harsh on Alikhan too.
Typically, we need loads of back rows - so I am not sure why you would bin one of the academy ones

With the wing options we have in the squad and the tightening of the salary cap, we have numbers there - especially with Green, David, Northmore, Beard, Hyde all having covered on the wing. It's brutal maybe, but I disagree that he's in the same league as Cleaves - who has something really special about him. Both raw potential at this stage, but if I'm betting on one of them locking down a future place in our team for many years to come then it's Cleaves, no question.

Again, if I'm looking at the restrictive salary cap then Trenholm and Jurevicius are ahead of Alikhan for me. All just my opinion of course. Players get "binned" from academies all the time - they're not all going to make it to the big leagues, as unfortunate as that may be.

As fans I don't think we know enough about Alikhan though. He's still in uni so well under our radar. I remember our last flanker who went to uni and then burst onto the scene.

I assume you mean Alex ? Also, look at the last centre we signed from Cardiff Uni !!!!!

Weren't we rumoured to be looking closely at a fly half from Cardiff Met?

Kenningham. Looked good for the A team a few times when he was 18 and then nothing for 3 years!

I have to agree he does a lot of unseen work, I do wonder if he is better at 6 than 8 but at the moment we have no choice. It’s not as if we can rely on Tualani to do a job.

Would broadly agree TBQ.

Due to his injury record and with Porter coming in and DC having extended for a year, I assume Steele will be off.

Taulani hasn't really had a shot in the first team despite the number of back row injuries we've had so, which would suggest the coaches aren't convinced.

Agree on Morris, sadly. Whilst he's been out with repeated concussions and injury others have staked their claim and looked better, and we have an abundance of back three players, plus Northmore and Beard who are also handy on the wing.

In terms of contract renewals, I'd be most worried about our good standard premiership players who are unlikely to get an international call up, e.g. Lawday. Would surely be tempting to pop over the channel and double your money.

Not necessarily that easy. I thought the French leagues had tightened up how many non-JIFF they could have on the pitch at any one time. Worth having a Marchant or LCD in your ranks (especially as you won't lose them to England) but a Lawday (or Beaumont, for example) is easier to find a French equivalent.

Can't see the likes of Lawday dropping down to Pro D2 or going to Tel Aviv.
