Danny Care's guide to England's RWC squad
« on: Thursday 19-Sep-2019, 19:20* »
From the Telegraph

England's World Cup gets up and running on Sunday with an opening clash against Tonga in Sapporo.

With only two players definitely ruled out of the game through injury - Mako Vunipola and Jack Nowell - every member of the England party will be looking to catch the eye of Eddie Jones in the hope of being included in the matchday squad.

But what do we actually know about this 31-man squad of players, save what we see on the field?

Danny Care has played with, toured with and roomed with many of the squad. Here is his inside take on the players and their very unique personalities...

Ellis Genge

I love his energy and aggression on both sides of the ball. Deep down he is a big cuddly bear and loves to take the mickey out of everyone.

Joe Marler

Brilliant to see him back in a white shirt, I know how much he has missed it. Without doubt one of the strangest but most lovable blokes you could meet. A great roommate.

Mako Vunipola

One of the most skilful blokes I have every played with. Hands of a back and power to match any forward. Snores a lot. There’s a reason he gets his own room.

Jamie George

The Ant to my Dec. One of my best mates. A great tourist, an unbelievable player and loves a beer.

Luke Cowan-Dickie

Relishes the physical side of the game and knows where the try line is. One of the best people in the world at Call of Duty.

Jack Singleton

Toured with him to Argentina in 2017. A really nice bloke and worked incredibly hard in South America so great to see him get the opportunity.

Dan Cole

Nicknamed the Sheriff because he likes to be in charge. Incredibly knowledgeable, can be very grumpy at times, and loves a scrum.

Kyle Sinckler

Best tighthead in the world right now. The deftness of his hands is incredible. Massive student of the game. Likes to think of himself as the life and soul of the party.

Courtney Lawes

The most laid back guy you could meet. A nightmare to play against, particularly if you are a small back. Quiet family man. Spends a lot of time on his seven different devices.

Maro Itoje

The biggest nause I have played with, and against, with his chirping and the positive energy he brings. It is so annoying playing against him, but you love having him on your team.

George Kruis

Loves a lineout. Allegedly rooming with Steve Borthwick all tournament. Would not surprise me if they are sharing a bed. I have never seen a man get so much abuse, but he absolutely loves it.

Joe Launchbury

The Bill Beaumont of the current game. Has the same backside. Such a nice guy and always puts the team first. A big family man.

Mark Wilson

A tough Northerner and a great, great bloke. Had to bide his time to get the opportunity but has since taken it with both hands. Delighted to see him do so well.

Lewis Ludlam

Haven’t played or trained with him but by all accounts has fitted in very well and works incredibly hard. Looks a hell of an athlete and very physical.

Sam Underhill

One of the smuggest men I have ever met. Likes to tell you how smart he is. Apparently does not own a TV because he likes to read so much. A hell of a tackler.

Tom Curry

Him and his brother look like clones who have come off the perfect-rugby-player shelf. Loves the game and loves tackling people, even if he hurts himself as much as other people.

Billy Vunipola

The best ball-carrier in the world. The game must be so easy for him because he is so much bigger and more skillful than anyone else. A dream to play with because he guarantees quick ball.

Ben Youngs

A hell of a competitor. His leadership will be crucial in Japan. I love it when he runs with the ball and hopefully he gets the freedom to do that. Off the pitch always wears his Adidas gear.

Willi Heinz

Another great competitor. Has had a great season with Gloucester. In attack and defence, you can feel his presence.

Owen Farrell

Winning is in his blood. Competitive at everything. Wants to win everything and usually does. He is absolutely vital to England’s success.

George Ford

Unbelievably skilful. Reads the game so well. Organises the attack brilliantly and will play a key role in England’s success. Also loves his Adidas stash.

Piers Francis

Puts it about physically and would run into a brick wall for you. Sometimes you need players like that. Can play in a variety of positions.

Henry Slade

Probably the best-looking player out there. Even the way he plays is aesthetically pleasing to watch with his passing and kicking game.

Manu Tuilagi

The guy with the X-factor. Can singlehandedly turn a game for you. Never seen a bloke as dangerous in attack or defence.

Jonathan Joseph

As fast as any of the back three. Defensively one of the best centres in the world because he reads the game so well and cuts some unbelievable lines in attack.

Joe Cokanasiga

Could be our Jonah Lomu. I would just love to be that big and hold the ball the way he does. For such a young guy, he takes it all in his stride.

Jonny May

Another one of the strangest people I have ever met. Once thought he was possessed by a chicken. Has that out-and-out gas and must be up there with the quickest players in the world.

Elliot Daly

Another guy you hate to play against. Had countless fights with him, but then you realise he is just a joker. Quick, reads the game well, huge left boot. Massive coffee snob.

Ruaridh McConnochie

I have been incredibly impressed by how he has taken to Premiership and international rugby. Heard rave reviews about him in training.

Jack Nowell

One of the most naturally-talented players I have played with. Makes everything look easy. No real weaknesses. Desperate to get fit and show what he can do.

Anthony Watson

Real nightmare with injuries in the last year-and-a-half so great to see him back in a white shirt. A brilliant athlete. He is rapid, explosive and very strong in the air.

I see that he has lovely hands and is a great student of the game. I have been to spec savers. Other optometrists are available.
