If the guy punched the mother, why was he shown the door by stewards. Why wasn't he held pending a police arrest!

Don't ask me. Watch the video and/or ask someone who saw it.

Aha!

I once saw an Ealing Trailfinders supporter use a silver drinks tray to direct the sun into the opposition kicker's eyes. He was swiftly despatched by fellow Ealing fans. The great thing about rugby fans is that they typically police themselves.

Separately, even though I don't follow football, I'm embarrassed by the constant 'holier than thou' comments on this site re football.

These laser idiots are clearly not sporting, so hopefully they'll be identified, humiliated, and banned from games of whichever sort.

No need to be embarrassed - just my (and others') view. You're entitled to not feel the same way. We also don't pretend that it makes a difference what we think - the country will carry on going nuts about football.  ::)

I don't think rugby fans do themselves any favours with the way the football thing is expressed because it comes across as posh snobbery because rugby is still a posh sport.

But for those of us who've moved from football to rugby -- I can take my son to rugby and he doesn't hear the f and c word constantly or witness violent threats and hostility or occasional bouts of racism and homophobia and he can see "rival" fans sit together and not have to be separated by a police force afterwards.

I'm sure there are plenty of rugby fans who think like that but thankfully they don't feel encouraged to say it out loud.

I think you can love lots of sports but recognise the differences between them, agreed though it can sometimes come across superior from the more enthusiastic members. Can't imagine it doesn't work the other way round too though.

But from my experience, I support Tottenham and was a season ticket holder there many years ago. The last game I ever went to was a home match against Chelsea which ended with the supporters being kettled by the police to keep the two sets separate, in itself a scary and intimidating experience especially when police on horseback used. I was sadly though stood next to a guy who decided he would scream and rant at the mounted police officer using foul and abusive language that was extreme and then proceeded to attempt to start a fight with him, just because we were being held whilst the other fans left. Shocking enough until I looked down and saw him holding the hand of his son who must have been 4 or 5. That was it for me.

I think the point is that I don't really care if football fans think I'm posh (I'm not, and I also know that watching rugby doesn't make me so even if it does have a "posh" history and still prevalent culture behind it) just like football fans don't care if I think a lot of them are idiots. Happy for the ones that are idiots to stay well away from me and live their best lives.

And for balance and clarity, I don't paint all football fans with the same brush - I have friends who are football fans who aren't idiots - but in my personal experience (and I can't emphasise that enough) there's something about watching a game of football that brings out the worst in a minority (but quite worryingly considerable minority) of those fans. One reason I can't stand the sport as a whole (yep, this is an opinion, try not to get offended).

Then there's the fact that I'd rather have teeth pulled out than watch a bunch of grossly overpaid, mostly completely unlikeable narcissists prance about and act like spoilt children for an hour and a half - but I'm acutely aware that that's (somehow) just me.

See I love football. And totally understand why they are paid so much.

But I have been to a lot of football matches and I loved it when I was in my early 20s but I was still pretty nervous at times even when I was a cocky little so and so.

And I just don't want to take my son there compared to taking him to rugby - where he doesn't have to see grown men snarling and abusing the referee and swearing and threatening violence.

I know there are family areas in football grounds and not all clubs are as bad -- Fulham for example not by all accounts as bad as Chelsea.

But I don't think it's right that football is still like that.

No one will ever be able to justify a pro footballer's pay to me. I don't care that it's a marketplace - it should be capped and the money the clubs save as a result should be absolutely pumped into community projects/local charities/NHS. "Should" - obviously I'm aware this will never actually happen. It's obscene how much they're paid and the fact that a lot of the time it's hard working people searching under the sofa to put together the thousands to buy a season ticket to pay those wages is just bizarre to me. Just as it's obscene how much top CEOs and bankers are paid with absolute discretion as to whether or not they fancy distributing that wealth more evenly to the people working downstairs who actually need it.

Call me a Marxist, I don't care - it's just a marker for me of where society ended up and it's sad.

Anyway, back to the rugby?

Wuss is a very long way to go for any local Quins fans who just want to get on the beer.

I agree with Blucher, in that I understand why they are paid so much, and you are right that it's the market. However I think they are grossly inflated in terms of value, so I agree with you on that point.

Where I disagree is in your belief that the earnings should be capped. I'd rather the market took care of that too, by clubs just not paying players such ludicrous amounts, caused (in part) by fans not attending, buying merchandise, cancelling Sky, or whatever they can do to make the point. Unfortunately I realise that won't happen either.

As for CEO's, the majority of top CEO's earn their money by producing results. This isn't the case for footballers... and I say that as a West Ham fan...

Are we 100% sure about the use of "were" in this debate?
