Dombrandt on the plane?
« on: Thursday 06-Jun-2019, 13:24* »
It was an absolute pleasure watching the Quins boys in the England game on Sunday and it would be great if we could sneak a couple more of them on to the plane for the World Cup.

I've seen that a well known betting company are giving odds on players to make the world cup squad and Dombrandt comes in at 13/8.
To put that into perspective Cipriani is down at 3/1!

I think he's ready to step up, but in reality it would take one, maybe two injuries for him to make it at this stage. But with 4 warm up games to play before the tournament that's quite possible!

Would you stick him in now, or wait for the six nations given the lack of experience?

I wouldn't have him in the final travelling group, but have him on the call-up list if there's an injury. Yes he's a great talent, but his inexperience counts against him at this point. Next season's 6 Nation I would definitely have him in the full training squad & see how he gels in that before making a call on putting him on the bench in the games.

Good prospect but this WC is to soon for him I would say he is more like 3/4 injuries away not 1/2

I actually think he should go on pure talent alone, but the question remains: who do you drop?

Wilson, Curry, Underhill, Vunipola won't be dropped. Robshaw is ahead of Shields, I'm convinced of that. If Eddie's feeling like springing a surprise then maybe Dombdrandt goes ahead of Nathan Hughes, who has never converted any of his Prem form into the England shirt for me. But then I think Ben Morgan deserves Hughes' place on the plane as second choice number 8.

So maybe... just maybe... it's a straight shoot-out: Robshaw vs Dombrandt.

I think probably it's more likely a Dombrandt vs Hughes toss-up, with Ben Morgan currently not in Eddie's plans at all.

I reckon Eddie will have him on speed dial if injuries mean he's needed.

Tbh, I'd much, much, much rather have Marchant on the plane - and it's pretty clear who he should be there instead of. *cough* Te'o *cough*

Can't see it myself. Next world cup for sure. Perhaps as a bench option in next year's 6N?

I think that Eddie Jones will have a few of those England players from last weekend in his pre World Cup training group as ' apprentices' to ease them in and have a good look at them - Smith , Marchant , Dombrandt and Mitchell certainly put their hands up  .

I wouldn't expect to see any of them playing in Japan unless there was a raft of injuries .

I think that’s a pretty good assessment. The RWC is not the place to be trying out brand new players unless you’re really desperate. There are bolsters, but they have usually had at least a few caps, and Eddie is already likely to be very short of experience in the back row and at scrum half, and with at most one specialist international fullback...

I can certainly see why we were so keen on him from the uni clips in this video!

It would smack of bad planning, and a hint of panic, if Dombrandt were to make the plane. Eddie will stick to the narrative of having been planning this for three and a half years, of everything being under control. Alex is still too raw for international rugby and I fear it would hinder him - as well as depriving Quins of him for the early part of next season, which could be a crucial chance for us to make a fast start.

I'd like to see him picked in the wider training squad and maybe get a run out off the bench in one of the warm ups, but he'd have to perform minor miracles - or rely on several injuries - to make it to Japan

As well as he has played - and he has - I think the like of Mercer from Bath (who has had a cap I think) is more likely to fill any gap in the back row.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to hold him back - he's had a great year.

Dombrandt would be a massive gamble. We have no idea whether he would be found out at international level. It's not a sane choice to pick him.

If there is one thing in his favour, it's that he's a natural and an unknown quantity. Other teams won't have planned for what he can do. I could see a scenario where faced with an injury crisis in the back row, Eddie chooses to roll the dice rather than go with a lesser option. But I can't see it happening outside that situation.
