After reading the concluding section in the article regarding Ford’s comments on going for a kick chase-game style game due to weather conditions of Treviso/Japan (of which I have copied below), you would think the fullback who is most attuned and situationally aware for that style and direction of play out of Brown/Daly/Watson would be Brown.

Here is the highlighted section:

“Having said that, first-five George Ford hinted humid weather expected in Japan and simulated at England’s training camp in Italy could enhance the value of a strong kick-chase.

“The thing we noticed most in Treviso was how the humidity affected the sweatiness and greasiness of the ball,” Ford said. “It was like playing in wet weather sometimes, and sometimes in wet weather, you are better off without the ball. You’ve got to understand when it is going to be like that and how difficult it is going to be to keep the ball. That might bring the kicking game into play more and having a really strong defence.”

Jones, I hope you are right in selecting Daly and I hope you prove me wrong, but from his performances yet for England I am not convinced. I wouldn’t rate him as one of the Top 3 fullbacks for Gallagher Prem standard, let alone England top choice of fullback. Hopefully Brown finds his way back into the World Cup squad, not that I wish anyone an injury but he just needs to be there in my opinion if we want a focus on a defensive game and a kick-chase one

When I say playmaker, I mean he has an excellent pass and is used to operating in the midfield.

When you see him attack he is looking like a third centre.

I wish Brown was in the squad, he was playing out of his skin last season.

He seems to have fallen out of favour and EJ rates Watson and Daly as better all around choices.

I was fine with Brown being dropped until that explanation - the two don’t add up which is typical Jones.

I kind of get what Jones means, even if it's oddly worded, and agree with Twickersman about Daly being a 3rd centre, come into the line, style FB

I just don't think that's improved England's attack, think that it has made our go forward overreliant on players who are high risk of getting injured, and overall is a daft risk to take for no tangible benefit

Maybe when EJ says he has some stuff up his sleeve that he doesn't want anyone to see ahead of the World Cup, he means bringing Brown into the squad? ;)

Or appointing him as a coach to sort Daly out.

I was posting on 606v2 earlier about how much of good fullback play - especially in defence - is about positioning off the ball, and it reminded me just how good Brown was at that aspect right from his debut. He just looked like a fullback from the moment he made his first team debut and it was obvious that he was going to be first choice for as long as he stayed fit. His England debut was less assured (not least because he’d been hospitalised with a stomach bug in the run up to the game) but his second chance - once he’d worked on his acceleration - had the same rightness about it.

None of the other candidates so far has given me anything like that level of confidence.

Absolutely spot on. I felt much the same about England's successors to Matt Perry. Perry was a true full back - he just got the position, lived it, breathed it. Shame he couldn't stay fit. When Balshaw/Lewsey/Robinson started sharing the 15 shirt it always felt very much a case of "here's a winger learning how to play FB on the job". Stark difference. Then Brown showed up. Now it's Daly/Watson/Nowell - so full circle back to that triad of makeshift FBs. None of which, I suspect, will hold down the position when another proper FB comes through (hopefully very quickly) post-WC.

Well, at least we'll get him

In fairness, Lewsey and Robinson did offer at lot to England at FB, just more at wing. But Daly is no where near as lethal returning ball as the latter or as awesome in defence as the former

Even after all this time I cannot get my head around Daly being picked ahead of Mike Brown.

Nor can I BB, as I said earlier he isn't the best full back at his (new) club let alone in England.....

X factor - he's a terrible fullback. Not fulfilling any of the sine qua nons of a position does not constitute X factor. He's quick, that really is it.
