I think that the idea of relocating to Portugal until one day before the game is madness. This strikes me as a similar decision that he made in South Africa, where he based the team at sea level before relocating to altitude just before the game. It didn't work then, so why try it again?

Are Cole and Launchbury injured?

Pleased to see Piers Francis has been jettisoned.

Backs look stronger than forwards. Front and back row look pretty bare

Good to see Stooke in, good player.  Some good players in there, just untried at the top level. If they can hit the ground running

Twickenham isn't at altitude. The mistake in South Africa was trying to do a smash and grab raid when the matches were played at an altitude that would affect the players' fitness.

This time, there's none of that. The players would be training away from Twickenham anyway, and it makes a minimal difference in travel time for what's probably a better chance of consistent weather.

Will the squad have to travel quite a bit between training base and matchday venues when in Japan for the 2019 RWC? If so, perhaps this is simply a long game from EJ to ensure that the players are used to such a thing, and are not too cosy in Pennyhill Park?

Quote from: Eddie Jones
We have taken a slightly different approach this year. With the World Cup in mind we are going to Portugal in the middle of next week until the Thursday of the Test week so will be back to train at Twickenham the day before we play South Africa. As well as giving the players a different experience it also gives them some rest after their club matches before joining up with England.

The Portugal camp is about getting the team organised. The players have all been playing in different systems and with different ideas at their clubs so it’s about producing a team that is absolutely brutal in the physical contest, as the game demands, and also playing a smart English brand of rugby.

Not quite sure that explains "Why Portugal?", but it's the two paragraphs most papers are going with.

Yes, I think that's part of it. And as to "why Portugal?", I would imagine similar travel times and a place with the facilities that Eddie wants to use were probably the determining factors.
