England Players taking off Silver Medal
« on: Monday 04-Nov-2019, 17:19* »
Has received a huge amount of criticism. Very disrespectful and petulant.  What message does that send to young rugby fans watching all over the world?

Cant agree.  I was pleased to see it.  Nothing disrespectful about that at all. They were not rude to the guy giving them out, they just did not want to wear them.  Second means nothing to them and that is the kind of mentality that breeds winners.  They prepared for four years and gave everything they had for that.  Disappointed would be an understatement for these guys. Brian Moore lobbed his medal into the Thames didnt he???  Another thing for people to be outraged about for the sake of outrage.

Can see nothing wrong with doing that at all. If they had not bothered to go up and collect them then that would be disrespectful. Have listened to a few top sports people all saying that nobody wants a losers medal at the top and many did the same thing. Why are the players getting stick for this? Has nobody seen the same thing happen at any of the other finals be it football or rugby.

Other nations are always looking at England and trying to paint us as arrogant. I can see what people are saying. But please, the players wanted to win the tournament not finish second.

They are right to be disappointed and hopefully that will drive them onto another level.

None of that was said or implied.  It was simply, "Very disrespectful and petulant."

A friend of my wife and myself had just won a judo World Championship.
She let my wife bring the medal home for me to look at. My wife said to her she was nervous in case she lost it. All she said to my wife was the medal is not the real prise the winning was!

That's you opinion Taff. At that level of Rugby, I can understand why the players did it.

They truly believed they would win. So finishing second to them is finishing nowhere.

Plenty of great athletes are disappointed to finish second. The truly great one want Gold.

Personally I feel that the negative feedback was unwarrented. I teach my children then playing is key but as they get older I want them to aim as high as possible.

One of the pundits (I believe it was Fitz) on ITV said it was perfectly understandable that the players didn't want to wear the medal, for exactly the reason that Twickersman made.

I wasn't impressed. It was unnecessary.

Well I’m sure no one will walk up to Sinks and point out their displeasure when they see him at The Stoop.

Such an irrelevance, individual preferences. Would have done the same myself!

It’s like being branded a loser (for some).

And then others will take that, want to wear it and begin to build again.

I’d prefer my team to be in the second camp, by a margin, but these are young men in the spotlight with few opportunities for greatness. This is not a moment to judge.

Plenty of people on these forums are delighted to point out the lack of "class" in professional football.
Maybe rugby's catching up.

Players have been doing this for years and only now has someone noticed. Strange that.

That "bloke" as you put it was....  Bill Beaumont.

Utterly disrespectful and unprofessional on a worldwide stage.

2nd in the world of rugby?  .... Man up!

Shirt numbers for 6N may already be lost!

Bill Beaumont, ah the bloke from Question of Sport, he was good on there. Dont really see him on tele that much now.

Had not noticed it was Beaumont as I never payed a huge amount of attn to the presentation and my view was hampered anyway.  Changes nothing though, players done nothing wrong.  As for losing the shirt.....jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez
