So much for the live press conference that should have been streaming 10 minutes ago.

Oh joy, Marcus at 10 and Farrell at 12. Because that worked well before, didn't it.

I don't hate that team at all. Would probably have preferred Lawrence to start, with Faz on the bench, but there's heaps of dynamism in the pack and JVP over Youngs is a very positive selection as well.

Still shades of EJ.

Marcus needs a solid bosher along side him to have that effective linkup play, so we will just get more of the same. Fairly disappointed in Nev for thinking its even conceivable.

Would of preferred Earl over Curry to start. And what is our obsession with playing someone at 6, who actually rarely features there for their club? Ludlam will carry well though, so lets see.

Not really Nev's call though was it, although I sympathise with your view on OF as a centre

Ultimately its SB who picks it, but he did come out with some sound bites saying he thinks it can work. I guess one of two things will happen, in that NEV work his magic and the attack flows and he will get a nice job offer. OR, we will be a team relying on penalty kicks at goal, as once the ball gets to Owen it won't do anything much like the AI's.

Charlie Morgan's piece in the Telegraph shows some hints about how Snapper and Borthwick might be looking at the Smith-Farrell pairing may work better given the other changes. I think the key is that before, with Tuilagi as a hard carrier in the 13 slot was the wrong foil to pair with Smith & Farrell. If you want to play a hard crash centre with Smith, you want him at 12 (as we see with Andre). Playing him at 13 meant that you had the impact too far out, giving the defensive patterns to set to accommodate both him and any break that Smith is able to generate from that. Instead, with a more elusive runner in Marchant, it opens up more possibilities.

It seems SB really rates Marchant. Wondering if he regrets leaving for France now?!

I'm sure the salary increase from Stade will soften the blow but I sympathise with his situation, must be frustrating that EJ didn't rate him enough and now it looks like SB does!

I wonder if Marchant has a good 6N he can find a way to play in the World Cup?  Hope so for his sake.

Anybody signed for a non-English club from next season can play in the World Cup. As long as they don’t play for their new club before the World Cup.

Marchant, LCD, Simmonds, etc. should all be available.

Which is why I keep saying that Eddie’s choices can’t have had much impact on Marchant’s decision. Marchant’s lack of availability for England pretty much coincides with when Eddie was due to leave anyway.

With the caveat that I guess Stade could force March to Play in a club game this scuppering his World Cup availability.

I'd be very surprised if Joe didn't have a clause saying he couldn't be forced to do anything which would jeopardise his WC chances.

The whole Farrell/Smith thing hinges on Farrell being told that he can't have the ball all the time and that Smith will make that decision in a heads up way. For me the best skill a captain needs to have is humility first and leadership second. Sadly, Farrell hasn't shown that at all in the past so if Borthers and Snapper have had that chat and he complies, of course it can work. He is the only blocker....

As for March, he'll have a release clause for England, especially WCs I'm sure

World Rugby usually insist that there is no domestic top level rugby played in the RWC host country before the end of the Pool Stages. While there may be some games played in the Top 14 before the RWC starts, I think there's some extra International Release windows granted to the Unions prior to the RWC to allow for training, warm up games, etc.

I think we will know early on if they will work. If Marcus is first receiver and is allowed to make those decisions, we stand a chance. If not Marcus isn’t even worth starting because by the time the ball does reach him, his instinct and vision impact  is massively subdued
