Really unclear how this ended up as a discussion about selling out the stadium or not.

The RFU makes tickets available to “grass roots” via clubs (that I’m not a member of) and ballots for places like Quins, England Supporters Club and residents ballot (that I am). It’s the basis of the entire way they run rugby.

It has always been pretty much impossible to go to games otherwise.

This autumn, something has happened that means hundreds of seats have been released for the most high profile games the RFU has to offer.

The SA game, got multiple offers of tickets from Quins and RFU all the way to game day - and in the end they went on general sale.

ABs, again lots of tickets made available at to England supporters club members despite being told how high demand was and that the ballot we were all in would be limited - this has never happened before for a game of this level.

There are currently hundreds of seats available also for Australia in almost every block, including lower tier halfway line. This again has never happened before.

So why could this be? Price could be the answer, as I was suggesting. It could be something else if course.

The RFU says tickets are for the “rugby family” that’s why it’s so hard for most people (including me despite vast effort) to go to England games other than v Samoa or Barbarians or whatever.

Now they are putting tickets on general sale the day before the biggest match at HQ in 4 years (arguably) having not found any “rugby family” to buy those seats.

Of course people will buy them if they’re offered for general sale.

My question is how these two things are at all compatible.

The “rugby family” didn’t want the tickets - in numbers that in eight years of trying to get tickets via all these methods - I and a lot of other people - have never seen before.

Why bother being a member of the England supporters club for “access” to tickets if I just need to be a bit richer and wait until they’re dumped on the website?

The RFU flogging off seats at the last minute to anyone who will buy them is not proof that everything is rosy, except for them financially.

Which is fine - but totally at odds with their stated ticket policy.
