Ward is 33, so although he's got fewer miles on the clock than some 33 year olds having come to the premiership late, he must be looking at retirement and so the rumours of a transition to player / coach make sense. I can't see why that would be an influence on Kyle, who's at a totally different position in his career: test Lion, starting tighthead for his country and with another 7 or 8 years at the top ahead of him as long as he stays fit.

Changing clubs - especially for a prop - usually means at least a season of underperformance as they get used to their new team mates. It's quite a big risk to take if you're at the top of your game, unless you're really hacked off where you are.

There is nothing to stop Wardy and his girlfriend going north together. She would easily get into a northern ladies team and keep the England position which is the one that pays.

Think the Dombrant, Clifford, Chisholm, back row partnership has gone really well recently & I can see Clifford becoming a really good 7, so why would he want to leave? If we sign another 7 then he's perfectly capable of fighting for his jersey, as he will have to do wherever else he may go. As Poorfour points out we've given him a lot of patience in the injury rehab department & I would feel a debt of gratitude to the club if it were me.

That's a bit of damning with faint praise. Croft had some outrageous skills but also some real weaknesses in his game. Clifford, in the season or so when he was actually fully fit (he was carrying that shoulder industry for quite a while before surgery), was a far more complete player, and he looks to be getting back to that sort of level. Even if he's lost a bit of pace, that shouldn't be a barrier to him adapting to a different sort of role (as Dallaglio did after he injured his knees).

Don’t disagree - I was talking exclusively about his speed.

Would however caveat that Croft, despite his weaknesses, does still have 5 test caps for the Lions.  He had a habit of going missing in the in the really tough games, but some incredible attributes for a flanker.

Couple of posts suggest Clifford has a choice in this , more likely that Gustard doesn't think he can do a job for him .

If that was the case would he be picking him as first choice ahead of Kunatani, Wallace and Bothma. Unless of course he thinks they are all surplus to requirements and Clifford is the best of a bad bunch. That may be the case, but I find it highly unlikely.

I agree Tbone , (and would personally start him ahead of all 3 you mention) , but I'm not so sure he would figure with a fit back row of Robshaw , Dombrandt and Chisholm - and there is speculation around Kwagga Smith

I think we can fairly safely assume that Robshaw will be winding down his game time and building up his coffee empire after this season; after seeming almost indestructible for a decade, injuries are clearly starting to take their toll.

Our current senior back row options, when all are fit, are: Robshaw (6,7), Clifford (6,7,8), Chisholm (6,8), Dombrandt (6,8), Kunatani (7), Bothma (6,8), Luamanu (8, lock), Wallace (6,8), White (6). We've needed all of them this season, though 8 back rowers in the squad seems a bit toppy.

Assuming Wallace leaves and Robshaw winds down his game time, that would probably leave space in the cap to accommodate Evans and Smith. They might want to lose one more, but in that case I'd hope they let Luamanu go but fight to keep Clifford.

Much as I think Dombrandt has been great and there is the potential for much more to come, Clifford is a former u20 captain and a capped international. Injuries have really stalled his progress but he is a fantastic player. Robshaw will hopefully still be involved with England and then after the world cup will pribably be looking to move on. Evans, assuming he comes, is still fairly inexperienced. Injuries and rotation need to be factored in so if we can keep him then as far as I'm concerned there is absolutely no sensible reason for letting Clifford go (unless his wage demands are absurd).

Luamanu is apparently off to France.  No that keen on White tbh

Wallace is 7 is he not? Agree with last comment...
