Game Changers
« on: Thursday 06-Sep-2018, 21:14* »
Seriously, please, Club, stop calling subs this. They aren't game changers they are replacements. Substitutes. Whatever you like. They will not change the game except as a result of fresh legs. And even then I don't think anyone could accuse Lambert of changing a game in any positive way.

Stop it. Stop it now, and kill it with fire.

Lambo is great. Leave Lambo alone. Also, who cares what they're called? There are bigger things going on in the world - Burt Reynolds died today and a Kuwaiti fishmonger was recently closed down for sticking googly eyes on fish to make them appear fresher. I hope I've given you a fresher perspective on life.

Gustard is very much into psychology and the mental side of rugby. He introduced the wolf pack at Saracens. He introduced finishers at England. And now he’s introduced “game changers” at Quins. If he thinks there is a benefit - even a 1% benefit - of describing the bench as that because, in his view, it makes the players feel more valuable / relied upon, then it is fine with me.

Let’s give him a chance to stamp himself on the club. And let’s just embrace it. Is it really that big a deal?

Last week I was so impressed by the team. I really feel positive for the first time in a long time.  Bring on the game changers

Disagree about the "fresh legs" comment. Replacements/ subs come on and affect the game all the time and not because they are just fresh.  I agree with the above, who gives a monkies what they are called

I do. It's naff and embarrassing. But, y'know. That's just my opinion.

You think that was as a direct result of the subs being called Game Changers? Or at least in part?

I don't. IIRC The players who made the most impact were there from the start. And to be honest I don't think the squad give two hoots what they are referred to, they'll play as hard as they can regardless - and especially to be selected for the starting XV next time out. It's a label, pure and simple, and one that, if we're not careful, will have other clubs laughing at us. It was bad enough Eddie J calling the England subs "Finishers". Jesus Eddie, they're subs, not Finishers. To call them Finishers suggests that you have no faith in your starting XV making it through a full 80, either by dint of stamena or ability.

But again, that's just my opinion.

It doesn’t bother me personally. And Lambert is a stalwart for Harlequins and he does well.

At the end of the day it’s just a name Gustard has chosen for his “subs”. It’s no big deal in my eyes, I’m more bothered about Harlequins playing great rugby/winning than what Gustard wants to call our bench. I’m sure the players either like the name or if not just see past it. They have bigger things to focus on, like changing the game for example

I couldn't resist looking up stamena but even I was surprised...:)

Completely agree on nthe game changers point, but completely disagree on the lambert point

Calling them game changers is pretty laughable in my opinion. It's the sort of thing many on here would mock if Sarries did it. I hope they drop it, but  I'm not gong to lose any sleep over it.

Lambert will go down as a Quins legend.

Gustard actually did an interview in regards to the use of "Game Changers" as a name. His argument was that in the past subs/replacements where only used for injuries and not as a tactic. However now the game is different and although they are still used for injuries they are also used to "change a game" (e.g. Care coming on for England to bring more tempo not because Youngs is unable to finish the match).

He mentioned also that he does not care if other people or clubs are laughing about the change as he and his players may well be laughing at other clubs for using subs/replacements  ;D

I personally did not really care about the change but after hearing the interview I see the idea behind it and am willing to support Gustard and the club in making the change  :)

Also just my opinion

Yeah i find it a bit naff, but couldn't really care less.

As above, Gustard says he doesn't give a stuff what people think.

There has been quite a lot of comment over the last few months about the lack of mental toughness that the squad was suffering under the previous regime. Anything that can get the squad thinking differently and hopefully more positively should be embraced. It is all about changing mindsets, and there will be many layers to that I suspect, from different training techniques all the way through to stuffed bears in the dressing room and calling the bench game changers. Its all part of the push for real change and as stupid as it sounds we should accept it and move on. Even the music changed. its all about new beginnings and freshening things up.
