Global Rugby Calendar
« on: Tuesday 31-Mar-2020, 08:40* »
I have been seeing lots of suggestions to change the rugby calendar.  Here is an example.

What are other people's views on this?
Personally, I don't like the idea of Summer rugby.  We often spend a significant amount of time in France over the summer months (anything up to 9 weeks over June to September)  So, it would probably be an end to me being a season ticket holder at Quins as I would be missing too much of the season. ( On the other hand, It would give me the option of becoming a season ticket holder for ASBH at the Stade de la Méditerranée).
The other difficulty with summer rugby is this - Does it go all the way through the sport right down to school level.  If it does, then there could be difficulty as kids would be doing exams or school holidays during the season.
I also don't think that games during summer months would be well attended.

The above calendar limits the actual games that are played over summer months.  But, there are issues with it.  The big one for me is that there needs to be 3 more weeks added somewhere for league games.

Personally, I'm no great fan of Summer rugby. While we may not always have the hottest summers - imagine playing through the 2018 summer where it was stiflyingly hot for weeks on end? I also enjoy cricket so I'd probably cancel my Quins ST as I wouldn't be able to go to as many of the fixtures. I see what they're trying to do - I just don't necessarily think it'll solve that many problems either and no doubt create new ones.

I like the idea, the Club World cup etc but Summer rugby im not too keen on.  Already have cricket and RL in the summer (although it would allow me to see more football in the winter)

I think that the summer has a few really big events in the UK / Europe
British Grand Prix
The Ashes every few years
Football World Cup every few years with European cup in between.
Olympics / Commonwealth games
Wimbledon

And, Glastonbury, Leeds+Reading & loads of other festivals
And other sports events - e.g. T20 blast

Together with school holidays.

Therefore, it would be challenging sell tickets to Quins games.

I've seen suggestions like this floated before. That one in the image basically has absolutely no breaks in the schedule for players. Look at the time from the start of the year through to the end of June. If you're a non-international player, you're likely to be playing every week. If you're an international, it's even worse as while you might get rested through the first half of the year, clubs would expect you to be playing for them in the European & "World Club" competitions and Countries would want you for the Summer & Autumn tests. That would force players to try to maintain a international-level peak constantly from the beginning of July through to the end of November. It's crazy. Also, add in that you're expecting to play the equivalent to the Prem Cup games at the same time as the European Cup games, then you need more players in all the squads to be able to field two complete 23s as well as backups.

It is a good time at the moment to look all sorts of things including a global programme. If you haven't done so Brian Moore's 'Reset' article on another thread here is a good read.

The issue I have with this suggested timetable is it seems to have been prepared from a Southern Hemisphere perspective and not taking notice of the different seasons in the Northern Hemisphere and the fact that there are many more sports played here, many in the summer.

I think that the seasonal difference between the SH and NH is a big issue.
I used to work in Johannesburg.  It is common for people there to get 15 days of annual leave. Leave also works differently in that you can accumulate forever.  Therefore, people often take less holiday than they are entitled to.  There are public holidays on 16th, 25th and 26th December and the 1st Jan.  So, most people take all of their leave in one go during December from the 16th onward.  All business practically close from that date until the new year.  All of the holiday season is done and dusted in one short period.
In the NH we have a long summer break during the school holidays where people take 2 - 3 weeks off - but the periods are staggered over a 7 week period.  Therefore, during any week there are 30% to 40% of the nation that are on holiday.  Then, as we have more leave, we also have the Christmas close-down as well.  Quite often, in the NH, when people are on holiday, they go somewhere else.  I.e. they are not at home.  Often in another country.  In Johannesburg, it is quite common that people remain home during a holiday period.  It is also rare that someone would leave the country.
The situations are totally different.

Would there be more injuries if the warmer weather in the summer made the pitch harder?

I’m sure the pitches would be well watered to keep them lush, green and soft. Hard pitches are an amateur problem.
