We just kept snatching for the glory of scoring a try when what we needed to do was trust the system, recycle, set up the next phase, keep gaining ground, repeat ad infinitum. Too many Hail Mary passes and too many stupid penalties. Too much white line fever when what we needed was cool heads. Aaaargh!

You can't call it white line fever when it's happening between the 22 meter lines!

Was there any positives to be taken out of the game? Didn't get to see it

Positives:

Maul defence was v good
Smith's goal kicking was excellent, he looked dangerous on the front foot, and his kicking from hand is getting better
Saili is starting to make ground and half breaks (but needs to pass)
Earle was good in attack and defence
Chisholm started punching holes
We created a lot of chances (but bombed them)
Clifford came on and didn't break

Catrakilis is completely and utterly useless. I'm astonished he didn't cost us another try. What a complete waste of time and money he is.

Ok. He’s played how much rugby in the last year?

That was immensely frustrating to watch, because it was a game that we could and should have won, thrown away for want of trying too hard to make miracle passes on multiple occasions, rather than just take the ball in.

On the plus side, we were on the front foot for most of the game, tended to win the collisions and the breakdown, maul defence was pretty good and Saili, Kunatani, Earle, Marchant, Smith, Chis and Clifford all played well.

The main cause for concern was lack of composure in the 22, followed by game changers who, Cliff apart, added little, and a scrum that disintegrated late in the game.

However, it was a positive in terms of controlling the game for long periods and attacking intent, the defence continued to hold up well (the decisive try was an interception), and there is still all to play for in the group. Even more importantly, having Clifford and Saili back and fit makes a very big difference to our squad depth.

In any case, I for onewasn’t that into him before Quins, and I get he’s been injured seriously for a good while and that he’s only just come back, but for me he just doesn’t cut it.

Well, you may well be right but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt a while longer. He barely got used to playing under JK and now it's changed to Gustard. He'll need a little time to get the brain "match fit", and that's best done by playing.

Why don't we play him in the A-League (if we have to play him anywhere that is)? Why allow him to get his match practice in important matches?

Presumably because Lang picked up a knock the other week.

Our basics were poor and discipline erratic but  we had to contend with a well organised Grenoble defence whose line speed was as quick as anyone Ive seen recently apart from Sarries .

I thought our pack played pretty well ,( Bothma had a poor day by his standards )and Saili looked strong , but the handling in the backs was unusually poor and we did seem to run out of ideas pretty quickly .

My concern is with Catrakillis  ,he certainly hasn't rebuilt  much confidence after his injury .

In the Sarries game near the end Farrell took a few steps towards him and he whizzed the ball over Alofa's head like a Frisbee and did pretty much the same thing on Saturday just after arriving on the pitch

Any oppo that has done their homework will be aware of his situation and will instruct their 7 and 10 to hit him hard as early as possible to unnerve him.

He's a good 10 , ( as we witnessed when he pulled the strings for the Montpelier side in the 2016 Final) and  wont lose his rugby ability but needs some game time in less pressure situations before he is back to his best .

Unfortunately with Langs injury that puts a lot of pressure back on Marcus Smith .

With the next few weeks being this new prem cup, hopefully the Cat will get more game time and get his confidence up again. Smith could probably do with a bit of time off, as it looks like he will be our main 10 for the rest of the season. With Lang out though and Swiel gone to Falcons, do we have an academy 10 that could provide a bench option?
