Harry Plummer

The Rugby Paper is reporting that we’re in talks to sign Harry Plummer (a highly rated NZ U20 10/12.

They’re reporting that Catrakilis ‘future at the club is unclear’ and Plummer is being looked at as a replacement under the NZ link up deal.

Definitely an interesting rumour, but I’m not sure whether another 20 year old Fly Half is what we need? IMO, we need an experienced 10 to compete with Smith and help him to develop.

Isn't he over here doing stuff with Quins anyways?

The club announced a few weeks ago that he would spend a week training with us after the AIs

I don’t know anything about Plummer but don’t agree that we need Catrakilis or another experienced 10 to compete with Smith in order to develop him. Arguably having a very experienced 10 does the opposite: look at our track record of bringing on understudies while Nev was playing. Hopefully Nev will be better as a coach in encouraging talent to flourish, and having three good players - an out and out 10 in Smith and two strong 10/12s in Lang and (if rumour is correct) Plummer could be a better bet.

If it does happen I cannot see it being a long term deal.  He has just signed his first SR contract with the Blues (after playing Mitre 10 with Auckland).  I think he is the U20 captain/vice captain.  Quick google shows he is highly thought of in NZ and tipped as a certain AB. Reckon we would get him for a season to help him develop

Why would NZ send a promising young 10 over here to learn, when they have the world's best production line for 10's right there in their own country? If they rate him that highly then this would be a risk surely?

I'd rather we didn't sign anyone who won't potentially stay here for several years.

They think enough of him to have him with the squad now for the tour.  Wasn't part of the link up thought to be that we could end up with some promising kiwis playing over here (and vice versa). It would make more sense to me for it to be a short term thing rather than them letting a promising AB in the making leave altogether

Quins being used by NZ as a development side? Not sure I feel entirely comfortable with that.
