I'm Proud

I expected we would be thrashed tonight. I'm so proud of the effort and resiilance that Quins showed tonight against a star-studded Clermont team. I have some renewed hope for the remainder of the Prem season if we can replicate that form in our remaining fixtures. Penalty count seemed lower than our last few games too.

Completely agree. We can do it against a sleepy Exeter. Come on you Quins! So gutted and so proud!

I was expecting a big loss, but thought the scoreboard early in the first half wasn’t a fair reflection of how close the game was. The second half was a magnificent effort in chasing what looked like a lost cause, and it nearly came off. Ultimately, we were two drop goals or two silly penalties away from winning that.

Also well done to Rob Buchanan - his arrows were a bit off, but considering that at the start of the season he didn’t know if he would play again, it was a good shift in most other respects.

I agree. Did well against them and came out with our heads held high. So near but so far...

I agree. The team showed great character. Stalwarts like brown, robshaw and marler showed up very well. Symonds again proved his worth. Kunatani and sailli were great subs and provided real impact.

Let's hope marler's not done himself too much damage.

Agree very proud but have a feeling we have seen the last of Sinkler in a Quins shirt. Gustard had clearly had enough.

A lions series, grand slam winning, England's first choice number three is hardly going to be ditched by Gustard. Yes he needs to be pulled aside and told to wind his neck in, but to let him leave is suicidal to our chances as a club.

I think we got the tactics wrong myself.  Said before the game that Clermont do not pay much attention to defence.  We were going to concede points no matter what.  Should have just thrown it around anyway (like we did at the end) and see what happend.  SAlli should have started and needs to for the next 3 games.  Auterac had a another good game, bodes well going forward. South had a good half when he came on.  Semi was excellent. No idea of his situation next season but keep saying I would like to see him stay. Walker showed nothing.  With Murley and Earle out, Id like to see semi given a game out wide vs Exeter.  Played there for Toulouse.  Nothing is expected from that game so why not.

The ref made a boob when when won the pen but he blew up as Semi was charging down the wing, would have taken some stopping from there.  SHC was good, cant see him staying though, not with Care and Landajo being here.  He is too good to be third choice.  Ibuanopke, getting minced at scrum time whenever I see him.  He looks to me that he starts too high???  Sink, getting fed up of these brainfarts from him.  There is playing on the edge and there is being stupid.  Glad PG got him off (although we went from smashing their scrum to getting smashed).

Better result than I thought, but again we were our own worst enemy

Hold on - our tactics were spot on and hence why they had to settle for two drop goals.

The trouble was they were very good with turnover ball, we gave away silly penalties and they were too good and too fast with breakdown ball for 20 mins.

Part of the problem is that in the 1st half was that we had the right tactics in kicking behind for positive touch positions at the right time; but because of our lineout quality issues it didn't work and cost us again.
In the 2nd half it was the discipline issues again that cost us, and we were made to look better by the touches of individual brilliance we are capable of.

Not really ...

The kicks Smith and Hidalgo-Clyne put in to pin them back in their 22 we’re both in open play, so it was actually Clermont throwing the ball in to those.

The issue was that when we did manage to win a bit of territorial advantage from kicks, we got a bit too ambitious and threw right to the back. Probably not wise given Buchanan’s lack of match readiness. Weirdly, we got more ambitious with the lineout even when it clearly wasn’t working. That’s not solely on Buchanan as he’s not the one calling it.
