Hold on - our tactics were spot on and hence why they had to settle for two drop goals.

The trouble was they were very good with turnover ball, we gave away silly penalties and they were too good and too fast with breakdown ball for 20 mins.

I probably should have expanded on the tactics point.  Clermont were always going to score points. To win, we were always going to have to score 30+ points.  First half I thought we were too cautious with ball in hand.  Second half, we brought Salli on (Who should have started) and we went for it and threw the ball around more.  We looked far more dangerous.  We caused them problems.  They score points for fun, we were never going to keep the score down.  Id go the same way this week against Exeter.  No one expects us to get anything.  Seen it mentioned that they will put 50 on us!!.  So lets go out and have a go, we have tries in our side.  Id happily come away from Sandy park with a TBP and LBP.

The fact that Clermont didn’t ‘score tries for fun’ against us bodes pretty well I’d say.

Our defence was very good earlier in the season, dipped alarmingly mid-season and now seems to be getting back to being good again.

Wasps’ performance at Sandy Park has given us a blueprint. Exeter probably won’t be as poor again, but if we attack them and play adventurous rugby, we have a chance.

The wind is always a factor there, so let’s not try to kick too much, keep the ball in hand and go for it.

I'm proud too of that performance. The boys showed real fight against a quality team away from home. It was always going to be tough with injuries to to some key players. We were under the cosh for long periods but still found a way to be in with a chance at the end. The whole team fronted up, especially Semi and and Francis Saili when they came on. Such a shame that try was disallowed for a foot in touch (by a centimetre?) - that was a brilliant attacking move.

It was a good thing it was, as we scored under the posts a minute later.

Bonjour
Have just got home after one of the most enjoyable away matches I have ever attended. The atmosphere before and during the match was amazing, and afterwards we were made to feel so welcome and thoroughly included in the post match celebrations.
Should a repeat opportunity ever arise, then I will definitely go along, and would recommend the experience to any Quins supporters.
Thank you to the ASM supporters for a great weekend.

Spot on RocQuin.
A brilliant evening and probably even better than our last visit a few years ago.
Disappointing to lose, but I felt incredibly proud of the team and the support that we gave them.

I think we got the tactics wrong myself.  Said before the game that Clermont do not pay much attention to defence.  We were going to concede points no matter what.  Should have just thrown it around anyway (like we did at the end) and see what happend.  SAlli should have started and needs to for the next 3 games.  Auterac had a another good game, bodes well going forward. South had a good half when he came on.  Semi was excellent. No idea of his situation next season but keep saying I would like to see him stay. Walker showed nothing.  With Murley and Earle out, Id like to see semi given a game out wide vs Exeter.  Played there for Toulouse.  Nothing is expected from that game so why not.

The ref made a boob when when won the pen but he blew up as Semi was charging down the wing, would have taken some stopping from there.  SHC was good, cant see him staying though, not with Care and Landajo being here.  He is too good to be third choice.  Ibuanopke, getting minced at scrum time whenever I see him.  He looks to me that he starts too high???  Sink, getting fed up of these brainfarts from him.  There is playing on the edge and there is being stupid.  Glad PG got him off (although we went from smashing their scrum to getting smashed).

Better result than I thought, but again we were our own worst enemy

Agree with much of that, but harsh on Walker. He got fended once, which wasn't good, but didn't see too much ball. One excellent break hinted at what he could do, but the bounce from his kick was horrible.

Big Josh definitely needs help in scrummaging. I think his height is counting against him, but you also have to remember what stage he's at, and whom he's up against.

Semi looked dangerous. I couldn't understand why the ref blew when we monstered their scrum and he made a break. I just assumed it had been knocked on or something.

I expected we would be thrashed tonight. I'm so proud of the effort and resiilance that Quins showed tonight.Penalty count seemed lower than our last few games too.
Agree about the result. I expected to get thrashed to be honest. But watching back then match we were, again, let down by avoidable penalties at critical moments, esp the two just after half time .... without those (hypothetical I know) we’d have won by a point.

The other momentum killer was the four first half line out losses (vs none for Cleremont) including one, as Gussy pointed out, that led to a Cleremont try.

Get the pen count down and fix the line out and we’d be competitive .... but these are long term bad ‘habits’ and Gustard and his coaching team seem to be struggling to fix them !

Better tackling would also help - Glynn bounced off their No 8 and Tapuai missed one that led to a try as well.
