...I just wouldn't be happy if one of my daughters brought him home....

Even if he was stuffed by a taxidermist so you could display him above the fireplace in pride of place next to the warthog and the wildebeest?

I know a lot is lost in translation but whew that statement does not paint him in a good light at all

Quote
“He [Ibitoye] hasn’t been involved since the start of the season. He doesn’t invest a lot. He has a Pro D2 clause which allows him to leave in the event of a downhill at the end of the season. He is, therefore, more in the management of his career rather than involvement with the club," said Agen president Jean-Francois Fonteneau to Sud-Quest.

"Even if the player has potential, in our context and given his lack of involvement since the start of the season, I said stop," Fonteneau said.

"Having refused a first offer for him to finish the season elsewhere (at Bayonne0, I have accepted this time that he join Montpellier."

"Good riddance to the mercenary Brit! Bof."

By him, do you mean Ibitoye? Because I don’t think it paints him in a bad light at all. All that’s said is that Ibitoye negotiated a relegation release clause... which is good sense from Ibitoye. Players careers are short and their primary focus should be on maximising their career. They should put themselves before their clubs... especially a club he has only been at for 5 minutes. Good for him.

If you mean their president... I agree, discussing private contracts with the media and chucking a player under the bus because he’s bitter that his team has been rubbish does paint him in a terrible light. It seems it’s pretty common in France though, the outspoken president.

This is a longer article from Sud Ouest the SW France newspaper. Sounds like it never really worked out. Whether Montpelier will be better.........

'Gabriel Ibitoye made the trip to Castres  for the return match without playing. Penalised for a lack of involvement.
Three tries in two preparation matches, a double at the opening of the Top 14 against Castres, and then… That's it… After three starts over the first three days and only 13 short minutes against Lyon (8th day), Gabriel Ibitoye has not put on the Agen jersey since November 7.

After more than two months of absence, his return was eagerly awaited by the Agen supporters who must have been surprised not to see him against Castres-as were Castres! First injured then released to spend the Christmas holidays with his family across the Channel, the English U20 international winger (22 years old) was nevertheless fit and included in the trip this Saturday in Castres where he even participated in the warm-up on the pitch with the team.

But Régis Sonnes did not put his name on the teamsheet.

The England winger rushed straight to the locker room, visibly upset by the situation. With injuries to other players the serial scorer announced as the future star of English rugby had good reason to believe that he would be there.

But why do without him, when Gabriel Ibitoye, flagship rookie of the last offseason, is on paper the main offensive asset, the X factor, of Agen this season? “No comment…”, replied manager Régis Sonnes after the match, with black eyes.

Towards early release?

"It's starting to annoy me a bit about this kind of player who doesn't play the game. I'm really thinking about getting him out."
Its president Jean-François Fonteneau, who had paid  30,000 euros in compensation to the Harlequins to sign him last summer, yesterday provided explanations for this choice of the Agen staff. And he is not soft with the English nugget: “He has not been involved since the start of the season. He hasn't played a lot of games other than the two friendlies. That was not the goal when we went looking for him. He doesn't invest a lot. He has a Pro D2 clause which allows him to leave in the event of a downhill at the end of the season. He is therefore more in the management of his career rather than in involvement with the club ... "

Clearly, with Agen going straight into Pro D2, Gabriel Ibitoye thinks above all not to get injured in order to find a way out into another Top 14 club, or elsewhere. An attitude that bothers and challenges. "It is not necessarily going very well, including with his teammates", confirms the president of the SUA who did not stop there.

“It’s starting to annoy me a bit about this kind of player who doesn’t play the game. I’m really thinking about getting him out."

Should he be released in the next few days, winger Gabriel Ibitoye would certainly have no shortage of proposals.'

I mean Ibitoye. It's not a great sign when the president gives you a spray about caring more about your career than the team.

The president does have history in giving ‘spray’. From November following their loss to Bordeaux:

Jean-Francois Fonteneau vented his displeasure on Twitter after his outfit's seventh consecutive loss which leaves them adrift and relegation-bound at the foot of the table.

"I was scandalised by the players' attitude. I'm considering punishing the team financially," Fonteneau wrote.

"It's intolerable that the team shows no respect as our sponsors and fans support us economically during this anxious time,"

I think he’s just a bit volatile and can’t deal with the fact Agen are really struggling. I think this reflects worse on him than Ibitoye.

I agree that he shouldn't be slagging people off in public and I wouldn't want to see it here, plus he's clearly a massive drama queen.

However I struggle to see how Ibitoye making such an "impression" that he doesn't play, the coach won't pick him, and the president hawks him around while criticising his mercenary attitude and offloads him to another club rather than continue to pay his wages doesn't reflect somewhat poorly on the player himself!

Was it the journo who added the bit about Gabs looking to just avoid injury so he can jump ship? That sort of thing sticks with a player...

Just sounds to me like the president is bitter his investment hasn’t paid off. Montpellier don’t seem too bothered and apparently he had several clubs interested. Obviously it’s subjective though, I can see where you’re coming from.

Anyway, hopefully it’ll be a good move for Ibitoye. The guy has bags of talent and is a joy to watch.

Well they were happy enough to take him off us and offer him a ton of cash, then act surprised when he gets a better offer elsewhere  ;D
