Interesting exercise?
« on: Sunday 16-Feb-2020, 05:12* »
Too much can be made of injuries / unavailability and yes squad strength is important. But if you were writing down your own best starting 23from the current squad if everyone available how many were in yesterdays 23?
My number is 8 . I would suggest that once you get into single figures virtually any club will struggle in any Premiership game.

Clubs also struggle when senior players play like total jessies.

So my best Quins 15 would be;
1. Marler
2. Elia
3. Sinckler
4. Lewies
5. Symons
6. J.Chisholm
7. Robshaw
8. Dombrandt
9. Care
10. Smith
11. Ibitoye
12. Tapuai
13. Marchant
14. Earle
15. Brown

So I have 5 of my best 15 who started yesterday, that’s pretty damning.

Apparently DC didn’t train all week and probably wouldn’t have made the 23 if we had others available.

I still think we are missing the point with the injuries. It doesn’t just affect games, the squad can barely train 15 on 15 and if we are drafting in outsiders to make up numbers they are not likely to be of the standard we need. Christ before I had to have my appendix out a week ago I was arranging with the club to go help at training, even if to hold tackle bags and get smashed. But the mere thought they were interested in me going shows how desperate we are as a club. If our training is not up to standard then how do we expect our game performances to be.

I totally agree on the injuries impacting training. My question is why we seem to have these crises almost every single season. Is it conditioning, training approach, the type of players we have, issues in physio and recovery?

We are not the only ones who suffer with injury.  Maybe other sides just handle it better, maybe we are too reliant on certain players being fit.

Other teams don't go into full on panic mode.  It's the "kick as soon as possible, force it don't build" mentality that did for us at the end of that game, along with the basics such as line out.  How many leaders were there on the pitch yesterday?  Evans looked the most vocal.

Mike Brown? He has some experience of being captain.
Might be a reward for possibly his last season.

Possible,  Id rather us look to the future with someone younger tbh.  Could depend what signings are to come in.

Leaders and captains are slightly different in my opinion.

From who we believe we will have next season I’d list our leaders as;
Marler
Symons
Dombrandt
Care
Smith
Marchant
Brown

Personally I’d like to see a combination of Brown with Marchant and Smith. I know Joe was tasked with coming back from NZ as a leader so maybe we will see him step up. I think smith might be a tad young and playing ten he has enough to deal with already.

As said before Evans was vocal yesterday and his play often leads by example but back row is some competitive he’s not a nailed on starter yet.

Clifford would be my captain; won the u20 World Cup, and when fit is one of our best players

Chisholm doesn’t strike me as a great captain, we often seem flat with him in charge

Symons is a leader for sure, I agree watch him around the pitch not just on the ball/tackle.

To be fair I’d completely forgotten about Clifford, not sure what that’s says. He is up there though if he can stay fit (that saying is true for all though).
