I've heard that Matavesi has been signed from Newcastle by Bath as the immediate replacement for the outgoing Roberts. If he was available, why didn't we sign him as injury cover instead of the unknown Newcastle 2nd-teamer ? Is it simply a case that Quins owners were not prepared to stump up the cash ?
How do you know we did not try and sign him?? How do you know that he was available when we signed Penny (2/3 weeks ago). Has he joined Bath on a long term deal?? If so, maybe he did not want an "injury cover" contract. Would have been a good addition but its not always a case of "lets sign him".

The fact that Bath were able to announce his arrival simultaneously with Roberts' departure would suggest they've been talking for a few weeks so he was almost certainly available when we were in the process of securing Penny. Matavesi signed a one-year deal with Falcons last April so 1) He's not averse to short-term contracts and 2) We should have been aware that he'd be looking for a new contract 3) One Year is exactly the period Campagnaro is forecast to be out . Bath haven't announced the length of his deal but I doubt it's more than 1 year or they probably would have publicised it. I don't know if we tried to sign him, but I'd be really concerned that if the terms were similar, he opted for a Bath team we've beaten home and away this season and to warm the bench behind Willison and Wright rather than start for Quins for the rest of the season.
I suspect the reason he joined Bath and not us is that Bruce Craig was prepared to buy him out of the remainder of his Falcons contract and we weren't
Injury cover for Quins rarely leads to a contract afterwards. Last one for whom it did was Glynn, and that didn't work out well for him in the long term. Why take an injury cover slot when a formal contract is available elsewhere?

To be fair, a lot of guesswork there

To be fair there's always a lot of guesswork on here! ;D
Thank God we didn't sign him. He is full of potential, but God does he make key mistakes. So I would say he is not a Gustard type of player.
He will be on deal till end of season, like Penny. Better to be in premiership than in champ. Newcastle save money as they are already virtually promoted. Newcastle have offloaded a few players during the season who are in last years of contract. Penny is unlikely to play much unless more injuries! People don’t agree but sometimes you just need players to hold shields etc. Many academy boys don’t train with 1st team as they will have evening training with dual clubs and can’t do both etc.
Maybe he preferred to live in Bath?
His dad in Cornwall is seriously ill, the press release from Newcastle says this will enable him to be closer to his family

So is the transfer fee #buyinghimoutof his contract taken into account under the salary cap?
