Just Wondering
« on: Friday 24-May-2019, 15:42* »
Now we've finished an entire season and improved beyond all recognition, can we say it was the right decision to replace JK yet or do we have to wait for another season to prove this wasn't an anomaly?

I actually do think we'll have to wait until middle of the 2020/21 season to know with any degree of certainty how successful the Gussy appointment is going to be. Sure, there's a high turnover of players this summer but I still think there's a few in the squad that he's waiting to finish up their contracts and make way. Plus we're on the verge of another sea change with the Browns, Robshaws, Cares getting on a bit now so his handling of that transition will be key. There are long term candidates to fill Robshaw's shoes but I'm yet to be convinced we have long term successors lined up for Brown and Care. And, of course, we're all waiting to see who Horwill has made way for. Next season I think he's working with closer to 90% of the squad comprised of players he wants to have there, whereas this season it felt more like 60%. I'd hope to see incremental improvement and a serious push for the top 4.

Nevertheless, I'm glad we have him - he brings no ego and fits the Quins ethos, whilst also apparently giving us more of that hard edge we've so desperately lacked for as long as I can remember. He seems to have all the rugby intellect and emotional intelligence to make a top Prem DOR/HOR. JK never quite had the charisma to really command a dressing room for me - I'm glad he found his next calling in player agency but also think he had a good run as a coach.

I’m not sure we’ve improved beyond all recognition if JK had overseen loosing 6 of our last 7 games he would have been crucified Gustard hardly gets any criticism

The proof will be towards the end of the next season but the initial signs are positive. A 5th placed league position with improvements in both attacking and defensive statistics shows we're certainly moving in the right direction.

I think the 2nd half of last season London Irish being the nadir, was probably (aside from the Bloodgate fallout) the most despondent I've ever felt watching Quins and I'm now feeling more optimistic about things going forward.

Gustard has taken Mapletoft's role more than JK's hasn't he? As in he coaches the squad whereas JK didn't.

Also waiting for academy coaches announcements or just Jim Evans for next season with senior coaches involved? Would have thought we need more?

Yes got to be easier to only have to concentrate on the team and not the rest

I thought Evans left either end of last season or the season before?

Really? We don’t have to wait.

Kingston oversaw a disintegration of the dressing room until the team was totally dis functional.

Brown and Care have both publicly confirmed that it was awful - Brown going as far as saying he was only happy during England call ups.

Before anyone hammers me about Kingston’s service to the club etc, it’s not about that - his time as DoR was an unmitigated disaster, regardless of results.

(And yes regardless of results because as we are now well aware, those wins were papering over the dressing room splits etc)

Yeah, we were getting battered every game against weak opposition. We've narrowly lost all of the games since glaws. Clermont, Exeter etc would have mangled us last year.

Agree, and the positive to take is all those games we could have won and as you say last season we wouldn't have been with 1 score.

But, is that just because he's a better defence coach than Nick Easter. Doesn't necessarily means he's a good DOR.

Jury's still out for me, we did 'well' this year with our league position due to bonus points but it was a tight league this year with (other than the top 2) most teams being beatable by each other.

I can't get the Gloucester at home game out of my head that something still not right.

Completely agree, i was not sad to see JK leave just as i was very unhappy with his appointment.  This season we saw great progress and I think next season we could improve a lot more.

JK great guy, loyal clubman, useless DOR.  Some people are just not cut out for the top jobs.
