Likely team without RWC players
« on: Saturday 22-Jun-2019, 23:26* »
So assuming Botta & Landajo are in the Jags squad , Campagnaro is off with Italy, Brownie, Sink, Marler and Dombrandt (long shot) are with England, Lasike USA, Semi with Fiji, Bothma with Namibia, what is our starting 15 going to look like?

Well here’s my attempt (it’s June and I’m bored);

1. Nick Auterac
2. Scott Baldwin
3. Will Collier
4. Stephen Lewies
5. Matt Symons
6. Jack Clifford
7. Chris Robshaw
8. James Chisholm
9. Danny Care
10. Marcus Smith
11. Gabs Ibitoye
12. Francis Sialli
13. Joe Marchant
14. Cadan Murley
15. Aaron Morris
16. Max Crumpton
17. Simon Kerrod
18. Mark Lambert
19. Freeman/Young
20. Evans/Lawday
21. Charlie Mulchrone
22. James Lang
23. Tapuai/Northmore/Chis Snr

My notes are that if Marler goes to Japan we are really short at prop! We have some academy guys but they have zero 1st team experience and an injury here or there could leave us exposed.

Wing is also very short on options.

If and it’s a big if, Marcus where to get drafted in (more likely for the 6Ns) then we are thin at FH.

Centre is really strong for us! Sialli, Taps, Marchant and Northmore could make some nice combinations (Northmore’s highlight reels on YouTube remind of Dombrandt, a man playing against boys).

Back row is also an area of strength so many combinations it’s scary.

Overall I think we will see another LH signed or a real commitment to blooding the Academy boys, I can’t see how we can not sign a winger. If we don’t and we get an injury I think I might as well take my boots to the game! (Clearly a joke, I would obviously cover fly half).  Other than that I think we are probably set and assuming we can avoid an injury crisis I’m really excited about this squad.

It is OK the season is delayed until after the pool matches and Eddie will use the great tactical skill he showed against Scotland to ensure our England players are home for the start ofthe season.

That’s a worst case scenario side and still looks fairly strong.

As it is, I think it’s likely we’ll have Marler and Brown to call upon and Kunatani and Garcia Botta are fringe players for Fiji and Argentina who definitely aren’t certainties for the final squads.

We’re obviously under-resourced on the wing. Even if Earle had not been injured, I still think we’d have needed another experienced winger.

I’d argue tighthead is weaker than loosehead. Sinckler will be away with England and we’ve let Big Josh, Swainston and McNulty go with only Kerrod coming in.

There will certainly be injury cover for Earle, we just don’t have any wings otherwise.

Odd no word that Lambert is retiring - this season he was on a limited appearances contract and pretty sure it was a last minute thing.

Yeah as far as I can see Lambert is still on the books, I was surprised but then noticed the lack of other props so maybe he’s a cheap insurance policy (without being too disrespectful?). I love Lambert and what he’s given to the club on and off the field.

I believe Landajo and Botta are both in the training squad for RWC so whilst it doesn’t mean they are going there is a good chance for them to go.

Baldwin isn't in the 42-man Welsh training squad.

Yeah I did try to do my homework before posting and checked all the training squads I could. Obviously they are just training squads so not a guarantee but other than the obvious additions I think they are a good guide.

Yup, didn't mean to question you - was genuinely just interested to know if he was or wasn't in the Wales picture. Good for us that he isn't - astute signing by Gussy. 30 years old, just past international favour.
