CLUB ANNOUNCE WHICH PLAYERS ARE DEPARTING THE STOOP AT THE END OF THE SEASON

Harlequins announced that the following players will leave the Club at the end of the season.

The players involved are: Alofa Alofa, Lewis Boyce, Henry Cheeseman, Ben Glynn, James Horwill, Josh Ibuanokpe, Dave Lewis, Mat Luamanu, Josh McNulty, George Merrick, Stan South, Phil Swainston, Charlie Walker, Luke Wallace, Dave Ward and Calum Waters.

Commenting on the announcement, Harlequins Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said: “To those players who are moving on at the end of the season, thank you for what you have contributed to the Club, we wish you well in your next adventure.”

Tributes will be paid to the players after this evening’s match at The Stoop and at the Club’s End of Season Dinner next week.

Interesting omissions that had been rumoured leaving/expected to leave: Catrakillis, Mulchrone, Bothma, Hidalgo-Clyne, Kunatani, Lasike, Lambert (will any of these be announced as leaving in due course/over the summer?)

Implications of that list for recruitment (opinion): we need another lock (Snyman?!?!?!) and TH prop... maybe winger too given Earle's long term lay-off

Wish we had held onto (again, opinion): Boyce, Ibuanokpe, Waters

Good luck and thanks to: all

No surprises in there TBH. I would have liked to have kept Glynn as a squad player and I wonder whether we may have let Waters go too soon.

Some real club stalwarts in there. I thank them all for their contributions to the quarters and wish them all the best for the future.

So now it is all official I would agree that we need a TH, Lock and Wing cover for Earle.  From the recent RugbyPass article it would seem that The Cat is def off but there are still a few Is to dot and Ts to cross say prob unable to announce in case it goes belly up at the last min.

No mention of Semi or Lasike.  When they signed I dont recall any mention of it being as injury cover/dispensation, just that they had signed.  We know SHC is only here as injury cover till the end of the season, so no need to mention.

Re Earles replacement, another thing to take into account, as Earle is injured the replacement can come from the 400k injury dispensation fund and not direct from the cap.

Good point, have added SHC, Kunatani, Lasike to the list of will-they-won't-theys. I do think we'll keep SHC and hope we'll keep Kuntani on his recent showings. Lasike I'm less bothered about - we have loads of quality at centre for next season and he's a project that needs real investment in terms of coaching time/energy/resource to turn him into a serious rugby player - much like Wade is having to transition in the opposite direction.

Best of luck to the leavers (apart from when they're playing for teams against us!).
Like QC i would've liked to keep Glynn. He's been a solid player for us, including filling in in the back row on occasion. With 4 (5 if you include Luamanu) leaving from the 2nd row, we are definitely looking light there.
Shame to see Charlie go, but it seems he doesn't fit into Gussy's plan.
Wardy has been a good player for us (at least until his loss of form this year). He made a lot of turnovers for us with those little T-Rex arms of his, as well as winning the occasional scrum against the head and skinning Harry Mallinder for a try in BG10. That said, I think he's now at the point where his game doesn't suit the current rules and we have some better options with more years to come in their careers than he has. I think he could actually become a decent coach in time.
Alofa Alofa has been a good squad player but I think we now have enough options (once Earle is back) at o/c & wing.
Waters is the one who I think we never saw enough of. There were always too many guys ahead of him for him to get decent game time at a high enough level to see if he had the "x-factor" that he promised when he was younger.

Some names in there I'm sorry to see leaving, but Gussy has a plan and he seems to know just a bit more about these things than I do. Hard to believe, I know.

Yesterday I saw on the club's Instagram a re-run of Big Mat's try against Gloucester (I think). It was a thing of joy to see him thundering the 30 odd metres to the line, especially since he was the supporting runner for Yarde!

For me the biggest losses are Alofa and Glynn. But we'll see who else comes in, sooner or later.

No mention of Mark Lambert I wonder if he’s getting an announcement of his own?

I hope we keep SHC as third/fourth choice, he's got considerable potential, but doubt we will. As injury cover he'll likely just get a short thanks and slip away.

Glynn's done much better than anticipated, shame he's off. Alofa's done a decent job but never shone. The game's moved on too much for Luke (nice boy though and reassuringly posh).

Many thanks to all leavers with special mentions for Big Kev and Wardy. Both have contributed significantly.

Echo most of the above comments.

Firstly thanks to all those leaving for their efforts, and good luck with what's to come.

Ward has been a great player for us. Always been a bad thrower, but not that much worse than some others. Great in the loose and used to be great at turnovers. Recently his form has dipped but some of the criticism he gets on here is silly.

Glynn started poorly but has developed into a really dependable player. Still wouldn't want him starting regularly, but happy now to see him on the bench and good squad player.

Wallace and Horwill I've dealt with in another thread.

Walker had great pace and attacking skills, defence let him down and seemingly attitude too, but he was a good player for us.

Waters I'd like to have seen more of. I know he's had his off the field issues. Based on seeing him last night and in various A games I wonder if he'd be picked up by England 7s. Really rapid. Not sure what his basics are like as I didn't get to see enough.

Not goping to do all of them. Most, while I wish them the best and don't want to be negative, I'm not that fissed to see go. Boyce is the main regret

I have updated the "Squad/Contracts/Injuries" section regarding those leaving and the returns from injury. Our wing situation is interesting, would ideally want one or two new signings to bolster the position personally...

As it stands if I can count properly (which might not be the case  :)), 16 players are announced as leaving and 12 have been announced as arriving.  Whilst I agree that we would appear to need more strength (in every sense) in the second row, given Gussy's comments about having a smaller higher quaility squad, I am not sure we will see any more new arrivals.

Hope I'm wrong!

Which is why I'm hoping we might see a few more leavers to trigger those incomings we're hearing about, as yet unannounced due to ongoing negotiations maybe (i.e. reports on The Cat etc.) It's like the housing market. Sell to buy, buy to sell.

I didn’t notice Swainston in the list. I can’t say I’m fussed about him leaving, but with Big Josh and McNulty going and Collier pretty injury prone, we could end up being light at tight head. Unless they feel Sassone is ready?

I’m hopeful of keeping Kunatani and I’d be happy enough with Mulchrone staying too given that we will also have Landajo.

As plenty of others have said, a move for the Cat is probably best for all concerned. I’m fine with Lasike and Bothma moving on too if they’re wanted elsewhere.

I really hope that a couple more leavers will allow us to make a few more signings including Snyman.

I thought Visser might be on the list as he seems surplus to requirements. Maybe he still has time left on his current contract and we can't offload him ?
