Premiership Rugby may be going to a new broadcaster

Premiership rugby could be leaving BT sport for new broadcaster

Coverage of the Gallagher Premiership could be set for a huge drop in value because it failed to agree a new deal with either BT Sport or Sky before the coronavirus crisis.
After failing to secure the new deal, it seems very unlikely they will get anything close to the £40million a year it receives from BT Sport.

Slow negotiations could severely harm value of Premiership Rugby broadcasting rights
Premiership Rugby is facing a significant drop in the value of its broadcasting rights because it failed to agree a deal with either BT Sport or Sky before the coronavirus crisis struck.

BT Sport, who have transformed Premiership rugbys coverage in recent years had an exclusive negotiating period with the league but that has come and gone without the broadcaster renewing, according to The Times.

They’ve reportedly also held talks with Sky but failed to agree a deal.

Premiership Rugby has declined to comment.

Well national press this morning is saying they have been so slow agreeing that Sky has lost interest and BT are likely to continue but paying less than they do currently!

I do hope BT keep it. They have been good and Premiership Rugby need to stay on BT or if they were to mvoe , it would have to be Sky. Anything less seriously devalues the league and will not pick up the causal value the other two channels can get.

Whoever gets it, I hope they continue to put the occasional game on FTA (Ch5 have had a number of games over the last couple of seasons). While the BT coverage has been far better than what we had under Sky, having it all behind PayTV doesn't give the game enough exposure.

There is mention of rugby going to Amazon but I can't even see CVC taking that option unless Amazon was going to pay a lot of money.

Accepting a much lower value deal with BT forcing clubs to cut their cloth accordingly would be a very good thing in my opinion.

Just an idea: If BBC & ITV lose the Six Nations rights, maybe they should pair up & try to get the Premiership Rights. Show 3 games a week (alternating between weeks as to which broadcaster gets 2 games). Surely the Domestic rights must be cheaper than the International Rights. It would give them a decent Saturday/Sunday afternoon Sport option for the first time in years, and also boost the profile...

Disgraceful that 6N may go to ‘pay wall’ if that happens interest in rugby will be over

I do hope Amazon don't pick it up. Their coverage of the US Open is terrible. It's akin to snooker on a black and white portable TV.

Mrs QA is a huge Tennis fan & we followed it for years on Sky. The Amazon Tennis coverage is appalling, particularly for the big tournaments, which Sky covered really well. If they ever get the Rugby contract god help Rugby.
