Think we already have our share of injury prone players

I prefer our existing options, especially when Marchant returns. I bet Manu would cost a small fortune too.

No thanks. Injury prone. Won’t see England  players play for the club for most of the season. Prefer the options we have already. I think he will either sign for Tigers or go to Japan.

Injury prone yes. But when he’s on form he is unbelievable. I can’t see in personally but maybe the Gabs to France is true, Marchant to wing like he had done for the blues...
but maybe I’m very much of the mark.

No.  We have one of the best 13s in England, why would we put him on the wing (we also have a very good set of wingers, with or without Gabs)

He would take up to much space in the budget. Plus I think Esterhauzen must have been brought in as a marque.

Also, we looks well stocked at 12 and 13.

I can see him heading off to France or Japan for a big pay day. He is 29 and has had a good England career. Maybe time for some new blood in the 12 and 13?

If he signed a £500k deal last year after being offered more in France he is probably a bit miffed that his loyalty to Tigers is now going to cost him even more wages. If the contract was for three years that’s a lot of cash. I’m not sure if players HAVE to accept a new reduced wage contract especially if it’s a longish deal already. For us it’s a tricky one but ultimately a decision we won’t have to make. On fire he’s brilliant. Out injured a lot or away with England would make him poor value for money.

Seems that the general feeling on here is that with his extensive injury record, and his extensive non availability due to England duties, he would not be a good buy, considering that he would cost quite a lot of money.
I agree with those sentiments.

I think with Esterhuizen coming in, we already have a better (IMO) option.

One of the things that JK said when he became DoR was that he had had some preconceptions about the squad and how he planned to change it, but when he actually got to see the contracts that players were on it changed his mind about who represented good value and who didn't. He wasn't drawn further on the topic, but it's clear that very few people - even within the club - actually know what we have agreed with individual players. And that includes journalists.

So although there's a headline figure touted for what Manu is on, it may not reflect what he would be paid in reality. I think we should have some faith that the club wouldn't negotiate a contract  - especially for a headline player of that standard - without taking into account how much he'd actually play. If he's looking to leave and make a quick move, it gives some negotiating leverage, especially if he wants to stay in England.

There's also a commercial element beyond the playing element. Clubs have a big financial rebuilding exercise to do, and that means getting bums on seats as much as social distancing allows. Manu is arguably the highest profile English rugby player at the moment, in terms of being a drawcard for casual fans, and he's an asset to any club in that regard. People who would like to see him play live and can't afford a ticket to Twickers might well be tempted to come and see him at the Stoop.

All of which said, does he fit into the Quins midfield? In theory we've got 6-7 Senior centres, including 2 big boshers (Estehuizen and Lasike), 2 playmakers (Lang and Marchant) and Taps, who can do a bit of both. We also have an horrendous injury record in the centres over the last few seasons. Manu doesn't have a great injury record himself, but he has been a lot more robust over the last 18 months and he would give us options at 13 and 12.

No thanks. Great player at his best, but for all the reasons already outlined, he’s a no for me.

If we’re going to spend that kind of money, I’d much see a world class lock.

Looking at recent seasons, I don't think we have the capacity to make this a viable argument though. If we (were) getting sellouts or near to sellouts on most Saturday games, a few hundred ticket sales isn't going to bolster the bank balance greatly. Quick maths says that "if" we sold an extra 1,000 tickets per game, at £25, for 10 games, that would bring in £500k. (Just example numbers, nothing too scientific about it). But how often do we have 1,000 empty seats? Would he play 10 home games per season? Even then, if his salary is likely to be higher than £500k, it still doesn't work out as viable.
