Marchant called into England squad, Brown back in too.....
« on: Monday 22-Jul-2019, 14:22* »
Ok so now it's clear I know nothing about what Eddie Jones thinks or which players he's written off despite months of evidence to the contrary.

Marler, Sink, Brownie and now Marchant into latest camp (so much for the last round being the pool of players that won't change, according to every article ever written on the subject....)

RFU:

England head coach Eddie Jones has called up 38 players for the third official Rugby World Cup training camp in Treviso, Italy (22 July-2 August).

The squad will fly to Italy from London on Monday for a 12-day heat camp to help acclimatise players to conditions expected during the tournament in Japan.

Bath Rugby’s Sam Underhill and Anthony Watson will travel with the squad after spending last week doing specialised strength and conditioning work separately off site while centre Joe Marchant (Harlequins) joins the group for the first time.

Jones said: “Treviso is a hard yards camp with conditions similar to Tokyo. Team training will be about being adaptable and off the field enjoying each other’s company."

On squad selection Jones added: "Selection is absolutely challenging, we have left some good players doing work at their clubs and they must be ready if called up.”

England will play Wales (11 August) and Ireland (24 August) at Twickenham Stadium and Italy (6 September) in Newcastle as part of the Quilter Internationals as well as an away fixture against Wales (17 August) in Cardiff.

England will begin their Rugby World Cup campaign in Japan against Tonga in Sapporo (22 September, KO 11:15am UK time) before playing USA Rugby in Kobe (26 September, KO 11:45am UK time), Argentina in Tokyo (5 October, KO 09:00am UK time) and France in Yokohama (12 October, KO 09:15am UK time).

Great for Marchant, I thought he was the best back last year for us and just about the best young midfielder in the country.

He will have to show adaptability to play wing, 12 and 15 if he is going to get into this squad come World Cup time and outscore Jonathan Joseph in training.

Jones is either not happy with what he has seen or wants to spice things up. I think the latter is the case.

He doesn't want anybody to feel complacent, so young, talented new players should shake things up.

Why does Marchant have to prove he can play 15 - a position none of the other out-and-out centres in the squad (bar, at a push, Henry Slade) can play and a position he has never played? He can definitely cover wing/12 in an injury scenario though - we've seen him cover at both very effectively.

Absolutely chuffed for him. Doubt he'll go to the RWC on the first plane (unfortunately, Te'o no doubt will) but really good to see he's right in the mix. And great to see Brownie in two consecutive training squads. Maybe don't write him off just yet?

World Cup squads are always about adaptability. If he can play multiple positions, then that is in his favour for a squad and potential bench spot.

However, with Nowell able to play wing, centre and full back, as can Slade (Minus wing), his chances are limited.

Agree, very chuffed re his chance, he defo deserves it.

I mean, I'm not convinced those players can play those positions at international level, currently Brown is the only person who actually is proven to cover 15 adequately at international level in the entire extended squad!

But hypothetically, Marchant has no reason to need to cover 12 or 15, as every probable starting winger can "kind of" cover 15 and Farrell can cover 12

Absolutely, adaptability/versatility is a great attribute. But as CJ mentions above, I'm not sure that's what Eddie is looking for from his centres (although Marchant's ability to cover particularly wing is a useful added bonus). And I'm not sure why he needs to show he can cover 15. Has he ever played there for Quins in a remotely competitive game?! I can't remember him doing so in any game. So now of all the times is NOT the time for him to be training there. I'd rather someone like Daly or Watson - who have both been stationed there for extended periods in an England shirt - showed they can do the job at full back without making me soil myself every time the oppo put up a high ball or make a bust through the middle of the park. Until then, they will remain last resort back-ups to Brownie and starters against weak pool sides in my mind, if not in Eddie's.

Well done Joe, Mike and also other Joe and Kyle. Cirpriani and Robson not there. Heinz still is.

I still can;t help but get annoyed seeing Shields and Francis in there. Not really convinced Ludlam should be either to be fair I don't know him that well, so can;t say I;ve seen him be poor or average as I have with Shields and Francis

Marchant's wonder / bizarre try vs Sarries does show that he is much better at claiming a high ball than Daly though!

Marchant in my eyes could make an excellent full-back. He is big, strong, fast, brave, good under the high ball and would probably relish the broken fields that full-back offer.

However, I agree he does not need to play there, I was just suggesting that could be his maximum adaptability. Covering 13, 11 & 14 is great flexibility, but no better than JJ who can do all three too.

Still not sure Teo should go, Jones-like Shields as he is a leader. He is very vocal and a positive character a good minder for the likes of Curry and Underhill. He also has the inside knowledge on NZ if we ever meet them during WC2019.

I have seen a fair bit of Ludlum for England u20's and more recently when Northampton have played on the telly box. He is very much in the Ardie Savea mould. High energy carries, a big tackler and a bit of pace and ability to break the line in attack. He is also a leader being Captain of Northampton a few times last season. He is very brave too, so adds competition to 7 and potentially 8 (where we are weakest).

Knowledge of NZ is irrelevant if you don't slow their ball down and none of our back row can do that but as he's left Robshaw at home........

Anyway, I'm not convinced he's got this all right either with all these changes and new faces that did ok last season and I'd rather Marchant was available for us if he's just going to be moved around to suit some ridiculous player pattern. He's lethal at 13 and would show that at international level. I'd love Mike Brown to be back in the 15 shirt but he must be getting hacked off with all this messing around.

The Cipriani omission speaks volumes as well about the proposed style of play.

Rated this as "funny" - but it's probably also true, which is... less funny when you consider that Daly is likely to wear the 15 shirt in the big RWC games.

Hate to labour the point and I'm not just spoiling for an argument with you Twickers (I promise!) but as I'm sure Eddie reads this forum regularly (lol)... just play Marchant at 13 if you're going to play him. If you go two wingers down during a game he'll also help you out there, but the guy was one of the top OCs in the Prem last season (if not, THE top 13) and there's no reason to remove him from a position where he is so effective BOTH offensively and defensively and put him somewhere that requires totally different positioning and reading of the game (15).

The less said about Francis, Shields and Te'o the better. It actually winds me up.

Curry, Wilson and Underhill are very good flankers and can certainly slow them down; Shields' play I don't know so well, but the level of criticism aimed at him suggests many don't feel that he's up to it and his few England outings do date suggests he isn't the best...

I agree, Curry and Underhill are much better over the ball than Robshaw (although I have noticed vast improvement in that area from Robbo over the last 2 seasons - particularly last season). Obviously Robbo brings other things to the table, but I have no issue with him being left out in favour of Curry/Underhill (especially as he's more 6 than 7 anyway) - it's Shields' selection that irks me. But hey, hopefully Wilson holds out for the entire RWC and we only trot Shields out against USA and Tonga, if at all...
