Well done Blucher. You were right, and we were wrong. But that’s not the important question any more. The important question is: “Is Eddie right?”

It’s downright bizarre to discard 320 caps’ worth of experience mid way through an RWC season when the players in question are still in good form. One of them is the only experienced player in his position. Two of them have only one experienced peer in positions that are frequently substituted.

Hartley I can understand, because his knee means he’s short of fitness. Robshaw has a lot of competition (and Wilson has definitely earned a place, though I am still at a loss as to what Shields brings). Care and Eddie reportedly had a falling out - but he hasn’t given any of the possible alternatives enough game time to settle in at International level. And while I can see the case for Daly at fullback in an expansive game, against any opponent that sticks to its game plan and has a good kick chase, England now have no international fullback whose been proven in those situations, and one who has been found wanting several times.

I’ve been pretty good at guessing what Eddie is trying to do over the past four years, but this time I don’t get it.

It’s utterly bizarre. Bizzle (we really can’t) had a great season and did all the things he was said not to do (pass, run lines etc).

He should be there. But Jones made his choice - and I understand why people tried to hope that it wasn’t final, but he’s not one to change his mind.

When the final, final, final World Cup squad which is the one that’s going to Japan is announced we will all know the actual players that Eddie has picked. There are so many in and out that it’s hard to know exactly what EJ is doing. Almost anybody could be called up at the moment.
I think it is pretty clear that baring injury the WC squad will be picked from this squad including the names injured players

Prove how? Brown, Care, Robshaw aren’t going to play for England again if they aren’t on this squad. Get what you mean I guess but they won’t have an opportunity.

Seems you've answered your own question  :)

I can imagine these players exceeding their own high standards in the coming season, just to show what England will be missing.

Maybe we'll have another long run of wins like we did in 2011. Ironically, back then people were saying it was because we didn't have players at the Workd Cup; the fact that our players weren't considered good enough for the World Cup was irrelevant.

It’s specifically set up so the final group is drawn from this list according to every thing I’ve read

That's not what's happened though. This isn't sudden.

Care - dropped after his Japan performance in Nov 2018
Robshaw - dropped in SA, recalled due to injury, got injured himself, hasn't played for England since then (June 2018)
Brown - dropped after the SA tour, hasn't played for England since then (June 2018)

a year later and people are surprised!

On a positive note, what a great opportunity for what will now be a very highly motivated set of Quins senior players to be the backbone of a relatively new Quins team and kick off the season with a series of early wins.

In each case, though, JG, they were in positions where England didn't have experienced backup. It would have been very sensible of Eddie to leave out three experienced guys who have shown they can jump straight back into the side in order to develop cover or alternatives, intending to bring them back in for the RWC squad.

But Robshaw was recalled to a training squad after coming back from injury if I remember correctly?

Loads of people come into training squads.

poorfour: It might have been sensible but it's entirely not how Eddie has ever done things. And it's clear it's not what he's done here, either.

I thought Robshaw dropped out to have surgery on a long-term issue, rather than incurring an injury at the time? I may be wrong though.

Surprising to me in that some of those selected are not head and shoulders above the likes of MB, DC and CR and are lacking in international experience. My opinion only of course, EJ obviously feels differently.
